I believe that is legend - a more probable version that I heard is simply this - not properly cooked monkey. In Africa, monkeys are (can be) a food source. You don't cook one enough, and bam, there's your AIDs.

I don't think AIDS is a new disease rather I am of the mind that we never had the technology to diagnose it before. To think that we could have catalogued every disease known to man by the 1970's is a bit naive, in my opinion.

I agree theWatsonian and also just because it hadn't infected the western world doesn't mean it didn't exist already in other parts of the world.

And yes, I have done research into this field. I have been very involved with HIV/AIDS prevention education since I was 14 years old. I started a educational program in my high school that is still used now. One of the few things in my life that I am proud of doing. When I finish my degrees next year I am hoping to work as an advocate for the UK's biggest AIDS trust.

The seriously scary thing that I see at the moment is the younger population being too relaxed about AIDS. The public information campaigns that were out there 10 years ago have slipped away. If is like we assume because we were scared shitless that our kids will be as well. With the increased usuage of drug therapies kids aren't seeing the mass carnage that my generation saw on the tv as kids. Thank god for that and that the drugs are allowing people with HIV/AIDS to live longer but it means kids aren't being scared into being smart. As a consequence less condoms are being used and the infection rates are on the rise in both the homo and heterosexual demographic.

Not just AIDS either. In the UK the gov't has been trying to increase knowledge of other STDS. All sorts of stuff out that will do you serious damage.

btw..the DVD comment wasn't targeted at Ragnar..rather the thread starter.

I've just watched too many people I love die to find the topic even remotely funny.

Actually a year ago in Armenia a group of scientists cured 7 jailmates that had AIDS. After the treatment, they could not find any of the HIV virus in them. The drug is called Armenicum. For instance, in 1998, Al Gore was busted doing what may as well have been placing a gun to millions of heads and pulling the trigger (except that would be a much more merciful execution). There are millions of people slowly and painfully dying of aids in South Africa, so President Mbeki was pushing legislation to do several things, among which included using generic drugs... the ultimate goal of which was to lower their costs in order to treat more people, very few of which were getting the treatment they needed.

So Gore, on behalf of the drug companies, travelled to Africa and gave him a nice little guilt trip: "If you pass this legislation, that takes money out of funding for research. Without that funding, we may never find a cure." Sounds reasonable, and sounds pragmatic. He also said that the legislation would violate the GATT Treaty. But what he failed to mention was that budgets for marketing had increased drastically more than budgets for research. He failed to mention that drug companies received most of their funding from tax dollars. He failed to mention that Merck Pfizer had made over 1 billion dollars in profit in 1998, had not paid a single penny in taxes, and had even received another $100,000 in tax credit.

So for no other reason than to put a few extra bucks in the pockets of his corporate sponsors, Gore was ready to sell the lives of millions of South Africans. Fortunately, Jamie Love exposed Gore's role, the press reported it, and a couple of outspoken people showed up at his scripted speeches to disrupt things, and eventually, he was forced to lighten up... and now the legislation is law, and many more South Africans are getting the treatment they need.
