Serious question for parents here.

At what age I should let my kids listen to rap? I'm NOT talking about j-lopez, that's not even rap, I'm talking about stuff like:

All of y'all mother f**kers,
f**k you, die slow mother f**ker.
My fo' fo' (.44 magnum) make sure all yo' kids don't grow.
You mother f**kers can't be us or see us.
We mother f**kin' Thug Life riders.
West Side till' we die.
Out here in California, ni**a
We warned ya'
We'll bomb on you mother f**kers.

thanks

I think that if you ever do let them then you should definitely talk about the content with them. My girlfriends daughter likes that stuff, and she is only 9. I told my girlfriend that I thought it was inappropriate that she was repeating some of the lyrics. She agreed, so she is no longer allowed to listen to some songs (strong sexual content). And I try to explain that it is not cool to be a loser pimp, with no job and education. And that these people only talk about "what I got" which is just ignorant. Other than that some of the rythms are cool. There is nothing you can do to convince your kid not to go along with all their friends opinions, so I just try to coach them through things. Just my 2 cents.

It's a personal values thing. Use of 'motherfucker' wouldn't bother me. Use of terms that are derogatory/hate filled to others would.

It really depends on the child. If they are able to listen to it and appeciate the good in it and not absorb the bad, then fine. If it is a child that is more susceptible to believing what they see/hear is true, then I think "not as long as you live in my house" is a perfectly valid response.

what if I allow them to listen to radio edited versions? My kids are 6 and 8, both learn ebonics as 2nd language. I was told it would help them to enter college.

6 and 8?

Your children, your decision.

I was talking teenagers.

Start them off as early as possible so they get used to being called "bitch", "ho", and "nigga"

I personally wouldn't allow music with such a hate and violence theme in my home, the swearing doesn't bother me. Sometimes kids don't even closely listen to what they're hearing and those messages are subliminal.

You can't control what they encounter outside of your home though, and it's important to sit down with your child and have a serious discussion about the ignorant hateful messages spread by music like that.

How old is your child? Do YOU listen to that music? (just asking because 'do as I say, not as I do' doesn't usually work with kids anyway)

Personally, not until they are adults...but everone has their point of view on things like this...ask yourself when do you want to expose them to material like this? And how will you explain it to them? ...better yet do they need to hear it in order to explain the realities and motives of material like this?

The only reference that I would make to it is that the language it uses is foul, and only used by the ignorant and stupid, and that most of the values glorified by it are those of criminals that usually end up dead or in Jail.

....personally I want my child to strive to do as well as possible, and shoot for the top of society, not the bottom.

Kids are VERY influenced by what they hear. It helps to determine how they speak, and what they value. They are like little sponges.

There is enought bad stuff out there that you have no choice but to deal with as a parent, without actually actively allowing or encouraging those influences

ahhh horse shit i don't believe in what kids see on tv they follow and what they hear on the radio they do. when you raise your child be sure to show them good values and morals the rest will follow. be there for you kid and be a part of they're life and you shouldn't have anything to worry about. oh yeah and whoop they're ass every once in a while when they get out of line, that helps also.

Definitely not at 6 and 8. Of course, once they start going to their friend's houses, you lose control over everything they do anyway. Mine are 4 and 8 and so far it hasn't come up, but I'm sure it will.

The exact second you tell them they aren't allowed to listen to it is when they are going to go out of their way to listen to it. Tell them it's great and the best music you've ever heard and they'll hate it immediately ;)

One thing you can do is not buy them the CD's that you dont approve
They're very young still, so unless they hear it when you're not around, it seems they can't buy it on their own.

Don't know about rap, but my little guy still has a couple years to becoming a teenager and he's already blasting rock music.

I don't know what to do. I like mild rock, but he's listening to that real heavy beat kind.

So long as they understand that it's only -for lack of a better term- "Music", and NOT to be taken seriously, I don't see it as a problem. That's where you being a good parent comes in. Not setting rules so much, as making sure they UNDERSTAND what they're listening to.

Of course 6 and 8 is still too young imo.

I'm thinking around the 12-13 mark, but unlike getting naked in front of the camera, there's no right and wrong answer.

I think that it depends on the maturity level of the child.

But the sad thing is, that the forbidden fruit is the best tasting.
