Just a little more clarification. Our dog is very tame and very sweet. He has been socialized with many dogs and many people. He is 4 months, but he weighs 30lbs. He was not "roaming free", we don't let him roam free. He simply jumped out of the car as we were packing it to see his daddy, m.akingcoin and then to sniff the mentally challeged guy. He did by no means threaten the man in any way shape or form. He was sniffing him about 1m away from him and his tail was wagging. The man was walking away as we were trying to get our dog back. Our dog was following him.

When out in public, your dog should be muzzeled and on a leash.

I don't like dogs. I was bitten as a kid and I have a problem with them. If dogs come up to me I just back away. If it looks angry and comes toward me with speed after I back off I will kick it the fuck upside the head and make sure it doesn't get up. I don't care how cute you think it is. Keep it on a leash and away from people.

Dog owners have certain responsibilities an they need to keep their pets in check. That doesn't mean you can control your pet 24/7 in every circumstance, life happens, an you just do the best you can.
If this "mentally impaired" fellow ganked your puppy as it was sniffing him, and riding elevators with his wang in the wind, then this dude is certainly not playin with a full deck and this time your puppy was lucky. What about next time when he gets away for a min. an runs into they guy? Your pup might not be as lucky next time. Having said that, you can't just assault a 'tard cuz he hit your dog. You know he has a deficiency. You'd get in trouble. Report him now, before its too late. Most likely, nuthin will happen, an there will be no consequences for the dog beater, but, at least there will be a record of it. An the next time sumpthin similar to this happens, an there prolly will be a next time, then a "pattern" of aggressive behavior, etc. will be established an the gimpdaddy can be dealt with. |

I like dogs and put up with their owners because I really don't like to fight, but I hate when strangers' dogs sniff me. I would kick the dog, but I feel sorry for the dog that has owners that can't control their pet. So your puppy got in a position and got hurt, and your mate wants to report a mentally challenged person for reacting. I would say you are lucky that the 'mentally challenged' person didn't have an aid to report what happened. ![]() |

Part of keeping a dog on it's leash and under control is for it's own safety and not just the safety of others. As a dog owner, I try not to let my dogs in anyway inconvience somebody else.
Reminds me of an incident that happened just before I left Canada. I was walking my three dogs (Rottweilers) when a couple of little Terriers came barreling out of their yard and basically tried to attack my dogs. Now of course, you can guess what happens when 30 pounds of terrier meets 300+ pounds of Rottweiler. Fortunately, I was able to control my dogs fairly quickly (down command) and push the Terriers away with my shoe, not a kick but more of a push. Very shortly after the lady who owned the dogs showed up looking shocked. She went on to tell me that her dogs were friendly and loved people and other dogs and that clearly my dogs were the problem. I set her straight right quick about her responsibilities. Later, when I got home I got to thinking what would happen if that incident went down the other way around. I called the SPCA and reported her for having vicious dogs that were off their leashes.

Exactly. Keep your animal away from other people and it won't get thumped. Believe it or not, a lot of people don't like having dogs sniffing them and getting into their space. A human's rights always come before an animal's rights. Deal with it. |

The dog being on a leash or not is a moot point since the dog did not display aggressive behavior.
Sounds to me like he could have had the dog on a leash and by his side, and this man may still have nailed it with his cane. Dogs today, infants tomorrow. |

I have to agree with some of the othesr makkingcoin. If your dog is roaming free ( i.e. your hand is not on the leash ) you have to expect there are people that may not know your dog that may get scared/panic. This sounds like just some whacked out guy , but some people have an extreme phobia of dogs.. and i can't blame them for reacting. I have seen terrier's rip childrens face's apart, if a dog comes up to me and my children, i dont know the dog and can't see the owner , i would kick it in the head also if it wasn't going away..

The guy has issues, and you're pissed about that, and maybe a little worried that something could happen to you/shortbread/your dog in the future as this guy has demonstrated he is capable of violence. If you feel it's in your interests to report the violent behaviour because you feel threatened by it, do so to your strata. They probably have the number of this persons' mental health team. Once its on record you have shown before that his behaviour is erratic and potentially violent. It also shows that you are concerned. Beyond that, understand that many people who are being devils advocates here have experienced or been witness to dog attacks, regardless of size. Show the same level of concern by ensuring your dog doesn't get into anyone's space by licking/sniffing them. I know a few people that would have no hesitation of kciking a dog doing that to them, and they are not mentally challanged. I have pets, and some people don't like them. That's the way it goes. Good luck and I hope you guys get it worked out. |

So, how is the dog? I hope he is okay.
![]() I would say the proper thing to do would be to just say something to him about it. Ask him why he felt the need to hit your puppy? He may have been really freaked out. Not do defend his actions, I think anyone who would harm a puppy (unless it's self defense) should get a swift kick in the ass, but this is a special case. Besides, it's not like he's going around looking for puppies to kick. But one does wonder if he lives alone and is running around exposing himself if he should not have some type of care.

well dude i dont think he should have hit the dog but keep in mind that if the dog had been on the leash with the leash in your hand he could not have approched the guy in the first place, as it has been said many times in this thread many many people are terrified of dogs even puppies so to prevent further injury keep the dogs leash on your wrist or tied to something so he cant approch anyone that doesnt want him near, with all that said i hope the dog is ok
