As a matter of fact, Van Halen is indeed benchmark. Around musicians that I respect they and all their cock rock arena hair metal contemporaries are THE example of everything music should not be.

I often think that that period in music is undoubtebly the worst and most embarrasing in history. The gimmicks, the athletics, the terrible songwriting, the terrible lyricism, the image, everything. Totally embarrasing.

You don't have to be a wine snob or listen to contemporary corny lite rock like john mayer to understand why music like this is such a joke. You do have to have an appreciation for what it means to be an artist. Sorry if that sounds too snobby for you. Art is something I'm not too casual about.

First saw Van Halen at the convention Center in 1976 or 1978 I can never remember , probably too stoned at the time.

My dad gave me Led Zeppelin IV a few years ago and I really liked the guitar work on that. It's not nauseating. I was actually fucking around tryin to play Black Dog last night before I went to sleep.

Saw Van Halen on the 1984 tour at Maple Leaf Gardens in T.O.

Easily set the benchmark for all other concerts over the years. Had 6th row seating and got backstage passes along with a few buddies. An amazing night it was.

To state that the music of VH isn't your cup of tea is one thing. To denigrate and discount the raw talent of a virtuoso like Eddie Van Halen is quite another. To try and support your position by purporting yourself as some morally superior art expert takes the stupidity a giant step further.

When I saw them for the first time, it was thier first time in Winnipeg and there was only 800 people there. Had front row seats and it rocked.

Took two weeks for my hearing to return after the `84 concert
:1orglaugh - total head buzz. It was great.

Next best concerts that came close was Boston at Kingswood (Third Stage tour) or perhaps Eagles 'Hell Freezes Over' tour at CNE Grandstand.

I still have a small concert pin ('No Bozos' clown) from the Van Halen Gardens show stuck to the sunvisor in my truck - from 1984.

This guy I know was hitchhiking in the Hollywood hills a few months ago when this guy in a pickup truck picked him up. They started talking about music and the guy says "Ever hear of a band called 'Van Halen'?". My friend said "yeah, of course". And the guy says, "That was my band. I'm Eddie Van Halen". Then he gave him some VH guitar pics. How freakin' weird is that?

Black Dog was the first 45 I ever bought all by myself as a kid in a record/head shop (as they all were). Has misty mountain hop on the B side. I still have it. It's on Atlantic label I think..

In looking back over some of your previous posts, I would tend to disagree with that.

That's just the point.... I don't have to argue the merits of the "art" you are so vehemently attempting to disparage, it stands on it's own. Go to any board anywhere on the web and start a thread titled "who are the best guitarists in all of music" and you will ALWAYS see the name Eddie Van Halen appear.

It's magic.

And lastly, one sign of maturity is having the ability to, although not liking a particular brand of music, to nonetheless be able to see the talent behind it. Case in point: I do not like 99% of country, but I can see the talent behind a few such artists and what pure entertainers some have become. To me the music sucks though, give me VH any day.... but I can acknowledge the talent. Can you?
