How does DLP compare to Plasma?

if we put aside brightness (Since I will be watching movies in the dark most of the time), which one is better to buy?

here is something to consider. I will have 2-3 consoles + a dvd player + surround sound speakers, so I will have to conceal the cables (if I put the plasma on the wall and make all the cables hang, it will look terrible)

I am basically looking for a 50"+ setup for my new basement to watch movies, play consoles, and watch some HDTV shows.

let's discuss!

I have my 42" Plasma mounted to my wall and I had a professionally certified installer run the cabling thru the walls and underneath the floor. If you're going to spend big bucks on a good system don't cheap out on doing it right

but see, if there isin't that big of a difference between the 2 technologies, I would rather get a 62" DLP than a 42" plasma for the same price, you know what I mean?

I am not dying to save space either...

I would pry go for the DLP. Your not going to be stayiing in the same place for that much longer are you? Why get all your cables in the wall/floors etc if you plan on moving the setup

I think, if I'm not mistaken, plasma has a very short lifespan compared to DLP.

taken from pcworld.com,

"But some phosphors on plasma sets may fade faster than others, leaving ghostly patterns on the screen--an effect known as burn-in. If you're addicted to CNBC, the ever-present ticker tape at the bottom of the screen will eventually leave a mark--as will static elements in video games (such as boxes showing your score) or the blank panels you get when programs don't span the full width or height of the screen. You can still watch this content, but if any single one dominates you risk burn-in."

DLP's bulbs burn out, but they're only a few hundred to replace (and I believe they last around 3 years).

The cool factor is definetely with the plasmas... Everyone who walks into my house sees the plasma on the wall and goes... OOOOOOOOOH!

Big screen tv's are so out of style ;)

You want a 50" Plasma, they aren't that expensive. The DLP sucks.

Go look at them at Best Buy.

Now, a LCD... that's better then a plasma can't remember the largest size you can get right now. But atleast 40".

I'm personally going DLP... that's personal choices. But if it's only the wire things, it's pretty easy to get them go through the wall...

If you're on a budget go with a DLP especially since space doesn't seem to be a consideration in your case. Some of the low-end plasmas will give you no better picture than a DLP anyway. Samsung makes a great DLP product.

If you're talking about a high-end plasma vs a DLP it's a totally different story! I own a 61 inch Marantz Plasma and a 50 inch Samsung DLP The picture quality on the Marantz Plasma blows away the the 50 inch Samsung DLP.

no kidding

if I were to go for a plasma I would go for a great rated panasonic one... I went to see someone at best buy today, and he told me that the quality of the pictures are the same from DLP to PLASMA (480p or something). just that the plasma has a much brighter, anti glare screen compared to DLP. he told me that if I had all the lights closed and what not, I would barely see a difference between a high def plasma and a high def DLP.

I went to Future Shop to buy a plasma and the guy actually talked me out of it and into a DLP. He said as far as product quality DLP is much better. I don't have Hi Def signal so the quality of picture is near the same with satellite. I got the 50" RCA Scenium and it has been great for me so far.

DLP all the way but if you want to go flat screen get an LCD. Oh, and you can get an LCD upto 65" now http://www.i4u.com/article2217.html. Used to be Samsung's 46" was the biggest.

Here's the TV that I have - http://product.samsung.com/cgi-bin/n...R408DX%252fXAA

It works great when watching dvds or hdtv channels, but some channels that aren't high def, it struggles a little with the picture, BUT from what I hear, most HDTVs struggle when the signal isn't high def.

One other thing about LCDs are that they have like twice the lifespan of a plasma.

That looks pretty cool. Have you seen it available anywhere yet? I see the reviews say Fall 2005 but I don't see anyone offering it for say yet. I'd be interested in seeing how it stacks up against my 61 inch plasma.

Soon but not yet. Sharp has always had rockin' LCDs and I'm sure this one will raise the bar.

Long term DLP is the only way to go. Plasmas fade, make noises, etc. I have both Plasmas and DLP. But would only buy DLP unless the install required it to be hanging on a wall.

My recommondation is to LOOK at a store locally then head online to see what price you can find. I looked through Best Buy and Circuit City then researched reviews online then ended up going to jr.com and I bought it for $1100 LESS than what the retail stores wanted. I suppose if you wanted to get the "Best Buy" warranty then perhaps you might be better off going local though.

I like my 61" DLP. Plasma is a bit crisper but I like the bigger screen for the same dough.

No it isn't, but it's well worth the price. Combined with a solid audio set-up you can't beat it especially for football games. It's really fucking incredible!

People claiming DLP provides a better quality picture than a plasma are talking out of their ass. They've never seen a HIGHEND plasma next to a DLP.
Granted some DLP's provide a better picture than a lowend plasma from BestBuy or CircuitCity however if you look at the highend plasma market they can't be touched by DLP.

As far as LCD goes, you can't get one bigger than 46" yet, I'm looking forward to seeing that new 65" Sharp LCD when it comes out this fall. It will be interesting to see if LCD's will take over the flat screen market when they are available in larger screen sizes.

I got a 52" hi-def widescreen projection TV in my family room, I like it just fine, buying a 42" lcd for living room and a 20" lcd for master bedroom. DLPs didn't seem much diff than regular hi-def projection TV is it?

If you want to spend some extra money go for a good plasma tv.
They last long enough.... 30,000 hours and more... if you use it 5 hours a day it'll work atleast 15 years.... nobody keeps there tv that long.
There are quite some brands that have an external tuner which u can place on a stand and the tv on the wall. All cables will go to the tuner.
Here's my pioneer with external tuner. ( wires are still a mess )

It's a 43" but I think I'll get the 50" soon.
