All I'm trying to say is those dogs have gotten a bad rap. And from my close experience with several breeds of dog, it's all about how they were raised and treated.

Had I been an infant and unable to defent myself, yes that dog could have killed me. My upper lip was lacerated requiring 8 stitches... yes I have a scar... and I didn't have the dog put down, I just punched it in the head extremely hard as an instant reaction. I personally find pits to have an amazing personality, and have countless friends who own them for anything BUT protection. They are great dogs, very protective and posess the capacity for lethal force, but very kind and loyal animals at the same time. I'm Irish, I have a short fuse, by blood, and I will snap quicker than others, and I will react ocationaly with excessive force. I was raised to quite the oposite, so yes, I beleive my blood has some to do with my disposition, but at the same token, because of how I was raised, I do not react in such a fassion unless the situation really calls for it. Just like the dog, push the wrong buttons and you'll get bit.

heh funny using pitbulls to label all of the bread is funny, there are so many typs of pitbulls, that arent even pure, half one thing half another you just label it. i live in canada in ontario they just recently banned pitbulls, i am a dog lover, i do have a big problem over it. there was some attacks in the past, but its all how the owner brought up the dog. and generalizing a pitbull for everyone in the breed, that knocks out the tiny harmless ones that have a little bit of it in them.

One of the Pit's real jobs is as a 'catch' dog, where he holds cattle, sheep and hogs by the nose and doesn't let them move while the farmer does whatever it is he wants to do. The chances of a cow hurting a pit are slim to none.

Also Pits do not have locking jaws. That's a myth. They're simply more tenacious by breed than any other dog and they're very good fighters.

They weren't 'bred to fight' unless you count treeing bears and chasing boars out of their den actual fighting. They were bred to help hunters. Hounds chased the prey down, Pits were then let out to eiteer drive it out of it's hole by going down in there with it and chasing it out, or to jump on the hunted animal and slow it down and drain it's energy when it would then be killed by the hunter. The fighting for show came later, in the middle ages.

Pits have historically been one of the most popular dogs in the world, particularly around the WWII period. They didn't start getting this bad rap until it became fashionable for gangsters to own them, and ANY breed of dog owned by that kind of person is going to be dangerous and wildly unpredictable. It's what their owners want them to be.

The CDC report, from what I've read, doesn't actually measure the frequency of bites per dog, it measures overall number of reported bites by breed. Considering the Pit is probably the most numerous breed of dog in the states, it's not surprising to see it at the top of the list.

Also it's smart to keep in mind that any and every dog that they can't pigeonhole into any other breed is automatically called a Pit as long as it's big and mean looking, and that the media focuses on Pits now just like they were focused on Doberman Pinschers in the 70's and early 80's.

A guy got bit by his neighbor's dog several times and couldn't get the cops or animal control to do anything about it. He finally got smart and said his neighbors had a PIT BULL that bit him (which it wasn't) and immediately not only the cops show up but also the media. Don't believe the hype.
