Florida dwellers, answer me this...
Well, a couple of questions really... about living there.
1) When are your busiest beach times? 2) Do people down there look forward to summer? or do most Floridians look forward to hitting the beach in January? 3) Is it just me or is the frequency and magnitude of hurricanes hitting your area getting larger/worse every year? Just curious, and I wanted to ask those who actually live there before forming opinions.

1.Spring Break is the busiest beachtimes.
2. I like the beach year round. 3. Hurricanes aren't that bad, except for the rare cat 3-5 which to me only hit here as much as anywhere, which is not often. |

1) Yeah, spring break is the busiest beach time.
2) I don't know if people look forward to summer like they do up north. Most people complain its too hot in the summer. Most true Floridians don't hit the beaches in January, its too cold. 3) I don't think we are getting any more Hurricanes than normal. I have lived here over 25 years and never saw anything like last year and don't think we will again for a long time. Until Katrina hit it had been 40 years since the last time broward country took a direct hit from a hurricane. I was also here for Andrew, that was bad Hurricane and hope I never take a direct hit from storm like that. I have lived here for over 25 years and I love it here.

1/ When all the Yankees & Kinooks are down here escaping their brutal winter. 2/ I hit the beach year round. Doesen't matter to me. Summertime is nicer though. 3/ Scientists have proven that we go thru cycles, we are in a busy cycle ATM and will probably last another 20 years or so. No biggy, omes with living in paradise I guess. |

Thank you Jay, that's just the kind of response I was looking for.
With regard to your #3 answer though, it just seems kind of crazy that the gulf coast just got ravaged by Katrina, and only a few weeks later you're getting hammered again, this time by.... what's it's name... Rita? And after Rita, is there already another one brewing out in the Caribbean as we speak? I'm just not sure if the hot glamourous tropical lifestyle in Florida would be worth the trouble of too-hot summers full of hurricanes. I guess it's hard to get past the thinking up where I am that Summer is short so it's a time to be cherished and looked-forward to, not dreaded.

Florida is great. The beach is great all year round.
You can swim in January. I've done it. The temp was in the 80's but the water wasn't very warm. I look forward to the summer. The summers are not nearly as hot here as they were in the Mid-Atlantic states. The surrounding water dictates the temperatures here and well the water in the gulf and Atlantic here are warm. The fear of a few hurricanes every year pale in comparison to having to shovel driveways and sidewalks. |

1) When are your busiest beach times?
April-May-June From Spring Break through Mothers Day into the early Summer. 2) Do people down there look forward to summer? or do most Floridians look forward to hitting the beach in January? No, our favorite season is Fall/Winter when it cools off a bit and is perfect outside. Beach in Jan? I'd say no...Aug/Spt or Feb. We know what the intense sun can do. 3) Is it just me or is the frequency and magnitude of hurricanes hitting your area getting larger/worse every year? Its part of a 40 year cycle of how the earth cools itself. Florida is but a speedbump along the path to the warmer gulf waters where they really blow up. Most of SE florida is new construction, Cat 5 proof structures. Water management is some of the best in the country. from 1976-1990 there were few few large storms. It will taper off as we hit the downswing in 5 years or so. A good article to read regarding the storm cycle is http://www7.nationalgeographic.com/n...re4/index.html ![]() |

A) During the traditional vacation times...Winter Break in December and Spring Break in March/April. 2) Do people down there look forward to summer? or do most Floridians look forward to hitting the beach in January? A) Summer is good because all the tourists and snowbirds leave so it isn't so crowded. Summer is bad cause it is so fucking hot. 3) Is it just me or is the frequency and magnitude of hurricanes hitting your area getting larger/worse every year? A) Not really getting any worse. I have been down here since 1990 and haven't really been impacted too badly by any of them. Andrew was the closest.
