Shopping For Hosts So I Can Launch

Maybe somebody could help me understand this..

what is the difference between bandwidth & transfer? i am comparing hosting options from a few companies & need to make a decision..so far i think i like webair since they offer;
? Unrestricted Bandwidth
? 100 GB Transfer

i dont know the difference between bandwidth & transfer? somebody spell it out for this n00bs... thanks

Bandwidth is the rate of data transfer (speed). Transfer is the amount of data pushed over the link. This means you'll probably get with what you've described, a 100 Mbit link, and you can only push out 100 Gigabytes of data per month, unless you want to pay overage.

Kindest regards,

JM

thanks for the help... much appreciated.

one more thought on this... it's not a concern right now because i havent launched the site yet, but after it goes up my next step is traffic building & i am sure it'll take a while, but what volume of traffic would put me over this for a site sized at about 900kb. i figure the limit is average 3.33 gigs per day, so how many visitors would i be able to handle? thanks

depends on your web site size... e.g. html/php + images. and then again, how many times users access it (e.g. how popular your site is)

With those bw calc's i guess i'd be good for 115,000 page views per month, that's an average of around 3833 page views a day.. i'd be 2 or 3 times over that on a single hun listing... in a single day what do the traffic monsters get for hosting?

I'm looking at a dedicated xeon ...
Processor #1 Vendor: GenuineIntel
Processor #1 Name: Intel(R) Xeon(TM) CPU 2.80GHz
Processor #1 speed: 2793.122 MHz
Processor #1 cache size: 1024 KB

Processor #2 Vendor: GenuineIntel
Processor #2 Name: Intel(R) Xeon(TM) CPU 2.80GHz
Processor #2 speed: 2793.122 MHz
Processor #2 cache size: 1024 KB
Processor #3 Vendor: GenuineIntel
Processor #3 Name: Intel(R) Xeon(TM) CPU 2.80GHz
Processor #3 speed: 2793.122 MHz
Processor #3 cache size: 1024 KB

Processor #4 Vendor: GenuineIntel
Processor #4 Name: Intel(R) Xeon(TM) CPU 2.80GHz
Processor #4 speed: 2793.122 MHz
Processor #4 cache size: 1024 KB

any thoughts on that.. would this handle high traffic? any idea how fast or slow pages would load on this server if there was high traffic at the same time?

First off let me re-enterate, bandwidth to transfer a little.

Bandwidth is like a highway with so many lanes, the megs per second mps is how many lanes you have. For example you can have 5000 cars go through your highway but if you do not have very many lanes they will slow down or even stop.

This is how bandwidth works.

The other factor is how your highway gets you from a to b like cogent takes the scenic route to avoid toll charges, Verio does the same but not as bad. Most pay for close to full access when finding the fastest path.

Even better is a highway that appears out of nowhere that gets you there even faster. This is what a redundant bandwidth connection does. It takes over of the main connection is too slow.

Imagine going to vegas and when the traffic piles up another highway drops from heaven for you to hit cruze speed again on

More info and how to calculate banwidth to transfer: http://www.dwhswebhosting.com/bandwidth.htm

If your going big on traffic then talk to you host it could save a issue later when your in the middle of your campaign.

Good luck!

Were you to ask me what I recommend, I'd have to say www.techiemedia.com

I'll add this....

The best deal is not always the cheapest deal. In fact it rarely is.

THAT FUCKER!!! what kind of business dont take credit cards???
so, i didnt get it.. he said only paypal, but wont take my credit card, idiot.. i found another one who just emailed me back, ---"Our datacenter in Dallas Texas and are connected to 18 x 1 GIGABIT (18000mbps) links to the internet.
Technically speaking, there is no such thing as unlimited bandwidth, however, our co-located servers in our data center are on an unmetered 10mbps connection to the net. As for unlimited disk space, so long as you follow our AUP, we will continuously upgrade our hard drives to meet your needs.

Thanks for your interest.--- so, 10mbps, but the other guy claims he has 100

Checked it out... the plan i went with for the above post i get unlimited space, unlimited bandwidth, even though he tells me in the email that there is no such thing as unlimited, but says unmetered?? whatever, it was only a buck fifty per month.. i dont think any of these hosts can offer better than that

We use www.cyberwurx.com and have been very happy with them for 4 years.
