Question for photographers

What do you do when you have a model that blinks every time the flash goes off?

I have had 3 models in a row do this and it's driving me insane. I have tried the 1, 2, 3 snap... tried bouncing the light another direction... nada.

Is there a trick to this?

Thanks in advance,
DWB

Reduce the intensity of the flash,

Angle the lights so that they don't go directly into their eyes

Or get some better models. I'm sure some come with optional blinking.

Hey DWB, haven't seen you posting for awhile...WB.

I would say just talk to them about it and come up with a system where they know to not blink for 1-2 seconds before you shoot. I've never had too much of a problem with blinkers.

Otherwise, you might consider hypnotism.

The only thing you can do is to make the model aware that she's blinking (a lot) and messing up your pictures. Some models are not even aware that they are doing this. I find this usually happens with girls who have no modeling experience. Experienced models have learned to deal with this but beginners have not.

As your shooting her and the camera is raised to your eye....just say "no blinking" in a nice calm voice. The beginner models just want to please you so just work with them and guide them in the right direction. It'll all work out

Thanks all. Up until now I have always been able to work around this but I just had 3 girls in a row, all noobs, who were blinkers no matter what I did. Just bad models I guess.

Dean... WOW. That model is fucking beautiful!!! Who is that?

Only fired one girl cause of this. Here's a trick. Have the girl close her eyes and tell her on the count of 3 to open them. Then start snapping rapid fire as she's just opening here eyes at 2. I learned this from watching a photo session with Raquel Darrian who had a blinking problem for a while.

3 tricks:

tell the girl to "space out" and go into a little trance. move the lights to the side a little bit so she's not looking at the strobe modeling lights.

don't let the girl know exactly when you are going to release the shutter.

use flash sync 1/250th or faster.

Use continuous monolights with softboxes. They'll feel like they're on a movie set and you will probably have to adjust the images a little to remove some red, but they won't blink because there's no flash.

a necessary modus operandi for video, and OK and shooting hubcaps for a catalog, but for not so good when photographing a girl's eyes.

to get the glamour eyes look of a victoria secret model you must shoot with subdued light on the set so the model's pupils open up. turn down your modeling lights to the minimum you need for framing and blast with bounced strobes or big softboxes.

and then you can play with minimized DOF to highlight the parts of the shot which are important and blur out the tacky model 8 furnishings in the background, or the stretch marks on her belly.

and you will get the "bedroom" eyes look that will get the surfer's heart pumping.

I would love to see a picture of a victoria secret model with huge pupils like the picture that you posted above. When I see a model with huge dilated pupils, I wonder what kinds of drugs she's been taking. I don't find this the least bit sexy.....but that's just me
