"the nerd idea is old" ?

was just talking with someone and he said "the 'nerd' idea is old" as in nowadys it's common for everyone to have huge knowledge about computers and be interested in technical things

do you agree?

nerd = not knowing how to behave with girls, nor partying at all, meeting other nerds to play computer games, interested in all technical stuff by default, not paying much attention to their looks

No. What's common is that everyone *thinks* they have a huge knowlege, but they really only know enough to get themselves in trouble.

Someone thinks that because they run spybot and/or adaware, they obviously don't have any spyware on their machine. Surrrre you don't.

Someone thinks that they're the shit because they plugged in a Linksys wireless access point and it all magically works. Sure it does....works for your neighbors too, and lets not mention the idea that an enemy/competitor can sniff your network with a properly configured pringle's can. Oh, and the next stage is "no they can't, I'm using WEP encryption!". *lol* Yeah, live in your dreamworld. Wait till a real terrorist or CP'er figures out they can upload their stuff from the park down the street...oh wait....

And just today....I was installing an external DSL splitter for a customer who proudly told me that he'd wired his entire house. Yup...He used the blue/white for tip, and orange/white for ring.

I could go on. But, no, there's still some use for a true nerd in today's world.

if this is how you define it, then it can't be common interest to be a nerd....

circa 1950 - "a Nerkle, a Nerd, and a Seersucker too" from Dr Seuss's If I Ran the Zoo

In the 60s we called people nerds if they were into studying for their classes instead of demonstrating and having sit-ins for peace

BTW - what most of you are describing in this thread is a "geek" not a "nerd"

I was labeled a nerd back in school and I was not really bothered by it.

Yeah, your friend is confused. Compare to: a lot of people can drive cars but not everyone can build or repair them. See the difference?
