I remember the silly Software Apple adopted a while back ago called "ORange" or somthing like that. Err NetObjects I think is what it was called when it came to market.

I was asked to evaluate it and and I called it a peace of shit. It didnt please the exec's listening behind the glass. I was concerned about open standards for web building.

Needless to say NetObjects was a miserable failure.

EviLGuY 09-09-2005 01:54 AM

Macs are fine in my opinion. I used to have one back in the day. I like how they work. They are very logical and I can appreciate that.

However for me the vastly superior amount of SOFTWARE out there for PCs is why I don't use a Mac anymore. Games especially are lacking.. and while I don't play that many I like to be able to. :)

I think my ideal Mac would be a laptop. It'd be fun to tinker with and would do all the stuff I like to do when I am away from home.

Was it server software? :1orglaugh
Just trying to answer a question about Apple Server software:)

They are not good at it.

Hence FreeBSD/Linux. :1orglaugh

What is Apple exactly?

I will tell you.

A company that had a very hard time deciding if they are a hardware company or a software company:)
At least Gates came out with a mission in Software, and left Hardware upto IBM/INtel, while Mac tried to do both. Now MAC is stuck in Hardware/Software Limbo and looks like Mac is gonna go with Hardware since all they are releasing is "innovative" hardware trinkets in cute shinney boxes.
By this time Next year people that are current MAC users are going to be pretty pissed about Intel making the Motorala's obsolete.

Lets see what happens.

funny.. a macolyte trolling by calling pc users brainwashed. I thought Americans weren't supposed to have a very developed sense of irony?

Oh hey I know...

I am going to go Play my PSP some. It has a Linux variant in it:)
Like a MAC.

Sony is going to put Apple out of business in a buy out. I think it is strange that the SONY PSP has some "Mac" qualities in it. Its not a coincidence.

Watch.

ya ya ya, Intel is making Chips for Mac... but just because Intel makes the chip, doesn't mean it has to be PC based... I am sure they are capable of making a similar chip to Motorola.

The reason why Mac dropped Motorola is because they couldn't promise to keep making a fast enough chip, where as Intel said that they could do it.

I am willing to be that the new chip will be very similar to what the G5's are using now. As far as I know (and that could be a short distance) it's the OS that ultimately runs the programs, not the chip.

Macs will always have a stranglehold on the creative marketplace and they play up to it most obsequiously. "Think different" is just a tagline used to play up to creative director's ego's to justify paying more for a machine that does less. But if anyone can wrest the latte sippers away from mac it would be Sony... but inroads... jeez.. every graphic design college in the world runs on macs even if it is changing slowly... but if the pupils are taught on macs and grow up to be teachers they teach on macs too.. it goes beyond hardware.

Well the difference between MAC and PC is minor. If you know a PC you should Know a MAC and vice Versa.

I really do not care either way, I use both its not a big deal.

dylan4U 09-09-2005 02:19 AM

I have had my poweMAC G4 for 4 years and it . Everything works 100% I have not had any problems for all that time. And I can use nerly all new softrware. Can you use a new software on 4 years old PC? I do not think so.

Why yes you can why wouldnt you be able to?

I can install Photoshop 2.5 on my PC and it will still work ( Theoretically ) and thats umm well ghee alot longer than 4 years. It would suck because color ranges etc would suck but none the less...

How about WSFTP, thats been around for ever as a simple EXE proggie.

You'd think so, but a college isn't going to risk it when they buy 100k of new computers when they've got their established dealer and repair people.. also the risk of attracting lecturers that might be weighing up between two jobs.
People have an irrational fear of using a different machine.. in reality 99% of what they would be doing it identical.. I mean photoshop on the PC is no different to the mac except easier to use with alt+ shortcuts.

It was a retarded statement that didn't really require answering in the first place.. everyone has old computers they run new stuff on. Trying to quantify it with subjective experiences from partisan sources would be retarded. I've got a PC here almost 5 years old that runs all the latest stuff. *shrugs* a pointless argument.

Amen brother. Choice of a pc or mac should always be supported of the needs on who's going to use it. I've heard comments that mac is far better than the pc but its just expensive and not all softwares in the market can run on it.

Wiggles 09-09-2005 04:30 AM

Macs are like Aol for internet, they are for people who don't actually understand how a thing is supposed to work, so they buy a 'user friendly model' aka i'm a retard and can't learn, make it easy for me!

Funny, because my PC is just a little older than 4 years and I *still* play any new game released, and use all the new programs. When I built it I made sure I did it right, with a great motherboard and a great AMD processor and with a few minor upgrades through the years it's still going strong. And at the time there were faster processors available (but much more expensive for the cost/performance ratio).

Enthusiasts are the most retarded bunch ever. You think because one thing suits your needs you feel the urge to push it down everyone's throat like it's the next coming of christ. I'm quite versed on building computers and technical knowledge and when a customer asks me to build them a PC the first thing out of my mouth is "What do you need it to do?", not "Oh here I'll make you this"

So go ahead, call yourself elite. You're so intelligent. In the meantime those who actually know what they're talking about sit and laugh at you.

Probono 09-09-2005 06:01 AM

Silly rabbits, some facts.

1. Unless you have used a Mac since OsX it is not something to compare to todays' Mac.
2. Osx is Free BSD with an Apple GUI, rock solid Unix OS with an excellent gui.
3. Macs are trouble free compared to Windows, very few viruses, trojans etc.
4. Because the OS is BSD to transition to Intel will be easy for most software.
5. Market share may be small but I like BMW's more than Chevys also; you get what you pay for.
6. If windows suits you stick with it, if you want better and are willing to pay more for it try a Mac.

StuartD 09-09-2005 06:11 AM

Macs are for people who are incapable of figuring out a PC, who are incapable of being able to do upgrades, who are incapable of thinking for themselves.

Macs are the "userfriendly" computer that will never need it's user to do more than stare blankly at the screen.

That being said, for music composition, for design and various other tasks... a Mac is a much better computer for the simple reason that the programs created for it are superior.

For doing business, the PC is the way to go as the Mac programs are still lacking.

For applications, it's not a matter of which computer is better at this point.. it's a question of which platform has had more experience in creating the software.

Neither computer is "wrong" or "worse"... they just have their strengths and weaknesses like everything else and you have to make your choice based on your own personal preference.

What? Intel is going to make a 'special' chip that will only be used for 3% of the market?

Let's face it, when Apple goes to Intel, Apple will be selling a piece of software like Windows. So if the architecture is the same, and I can install Linux, Windows, FreeBSD, or MacOS (freeBSD with a GUI) on my Intel based machine.... which one am I going to install? The choice depends on what I am using it for.

I wouldn't install Linux on my worst enemy's machine, so that eliminates that.

I would only install FreeBSD on a server.

I would only install Windows if I wanted to use every peice of software known to man, and not deal with niche bullshit.

I would only install MacOS (what I am calling it, marketing gurus will rename it) if I wanted to be 'cool', vote Domocrat, run 10% of available software, and drive my microbus around SunnyVale. Peace brother.

Fred Quimby 09-09-2005 06:21 AM

PC software = FREE and fun

psili 09-09-2005 07:40 AM

Great points.

Personally, I hate Macs because of all the elitist designers who think their special.

Here's a tip to all designers out there: Just because you use a Mac for creative purposes, does not make you special or elite - just makes you another "designer" type person, who most likely creates shitty designs on a high-priced machine.

Yea, retarded answer; I know.

:2 cents:
