Jerry Rice retires. 45% say he is the best ever.

I'm proud to be part of the 45% that say he is the greatest football player ever.

Jerry Rice is without a doubt the best receiver ever in the NFL. Check the record book.

Thanks for the memories Jerry. Proof positive that hard work can pay off.

He stuck around a little too long I agree & being a Cowboys fan, I hated him(niners) but he was/is the greatest reciever of all time.
But you cant down a guy for loving what he does, hes one of the few players around that long that was around that long not for the $$ but because he loved the game, it's gotta be hard to leave when you love something tat much. 'grats to him tho!

Best receiver ever and one hell of a nice guy - an absolute professional and a credit to the sport. His dedication and work ethic toward his profession is certainly worthy of admiration.

The top receivers playing the game today could learn from Jerry. He deserves to be inducted into the Hall Of Fame on his first year of eligibility!

They should skip the 5 year wait for the greatest ever. He should be in the Hall tomorrow.

The best ever in my opinion !
time for him to hang em up and enjoy life.

Guys like him and Jordan who were soo competitive and play at a
higher level then most players always find it the hardest to say good bye.

Saw this on the Bay Area news tonight...apparently the Niners do not want to ceremoniously sign Jerry Rice for one day so that he can officially retire as a 49er (such as the Raiders recently did for one of their all time greats, Tim Brown, who left the team near the end of his career).

The new coach said he felt it would be disruptive to the current team to cut somebody for one day in order to make it happen.

What a bunch of bunk. They could still do it before their first game. If anyone deserves such an honor it is Jerry Rice. He will always be remembered as a Niner despite just one more example of the lack of class in the organization since Eddie DeBartolo was forced to surrender his ownership role.

Art Monk was indeed a great receiver. However compare his accomplishments to those of Jerry Rice...

Rice had about 50% more receptions in his career, double the yards, triple the touchdowns, and more than four times as many Pro-Bowl appearances as Monk did.

Take each of their five best year's...again Rice's stats far overshadow those of Art Monk.

Again, I am not taking anything away from Monk, I am just using his stats to demonstrate how truly remarkable Jerry Rice was.

I've been a fan of John Elway since he was in college. I was able to attend some of his games at Stanford (where he was also a baseball star), and saw him play as a pro in the Bay Area several times.

Elway was a great one. A true warrior. Imagine if he could have run half as well as he passed...of course, one thing preventing that is among his many records, Elway is the all-time leading quarterback for being sacked.

I was so proud for him when he finally won the Super Bowl. As a quarterback he ranks up among the top in my book, both for accomplishments and heart.

Jerry Rice is the undisputed #1 when it comes to all-time receivers though...

What else can I not do? I'm intrigued to know, and often seek the enlightenment of others - regarding "my" tastes and preferences. Because if anyone KNOWS what "I" like, why I like, and or who I like, it definitely has to be members on an adult message board.

Let's look at this on an analytical stance..."We", instinctively like to confine things in nice neat packages. With "best of" lists, varying from our favorite/worst books, to music. In this case, sports. But in the end, that's all this is. Neat little personalized package of self-reflection/opinions...Although I'm aware of this, and how futile in essence (my #1 group is, my #2 fav is, blah blah) I still partake in it. Why? I like to establish who I like, and see who others like. Now, I may disagree. However, at no which point do I say so and so "can't" be on the list. Why? Because afterall, it is your "neat, little personalized package" of introspective thought/personal taste. Who am I to say otherwise?

Oh well, whatever. The world must be nice in black and white.

Sad its hard to see one of the greatest players of all times retire, but I agree he is the best wide receiver I ever saw since I became addicted to this game and it was an honor to watch Jerry Rice on the field.

RAIDERS FAN

P.S: He gave me so many headaches as a niner . . .

My first NFL game ever was a Broncos game. 87 I believe. Since then its been all about John. Hey he had a good pair of legs, in fact he was considered in those days as somewhat of a scrambling quarterback when compared to Marino and Kelly. it was the offensive line that was the problem.

He's definately #1. After all he is the games all time winningest quarter back. A record I'm sure our Tom Brady here in New England is looking to challenge if Bob Kraft and company can keep the Pats competitive over the life of his contract.

Jerry Rice falls somewhere in the top 5. Along with Jim Brown, Dan Marino, Joe Montana.

Top 10 you ask? No particular order....Steve Young, Dick Butkus, Lawrence Taylor, Walter Payton, Deion Sanders.

WE ARE NOT TALKING RECEIVERS

The ESPN Poll had more than 80,000 voters. They were voting on greatest football player ever, not receiver, and he got 45% of the vote.

He is obviously the best unless you are a fan boy. Here is a hint, if you think the best player ever is the QB of the team you watched when you were a kid you are a fan boy.
