for home protection a shot gun is best ,just point in a general direction and fire. With a pistol you can miss at point blank range.

My buddy has a really nice 12 gauge with double pistol grips and 19" barrel ... 18 is legal but 19 is just safer .... if you ever have any issues ..they won't go through the whole measuring to see if it is or not ... we load it with 50cal slugs and blast the shit out of things when we go camping .... and makes for good home security if you can't have a pistol ... there's something about hearing one of those things rack that will scare off anyone ...

the one shotgun says this
"When the lights go out you'll have the advantage with these ghost-ring tritium inserts. Optional three-dot inserts can be easily installed into this military spec ghost-ring sight. The rear sight is click-adjustable for both windage and elevation with a coin or shot shell rim. These sights are intended for rough service with rugged ?wings? to protect the removable ghost ring and front post." Is that like mini night vision or something? |

Get a remington 870 express, good durable 12 guage shotgun, then get triple ot buck shot for it with 3 inch magnum loads, it will distroy anything in its path, it's like shooting 9 .38 caliber rounds at once~ I use a pistol for home protectio, S&W 40 semi auto, very nice pistol

Why do you need a gun being so young? Pistols are not good, had a boss captain special forces three tours in nam. He said home envasion people are scared ,nervous and can miss very close with a pistol. When I first moved to atlanta there was a asian gang thing at a chinese restaurant.A gang member walked up to a table and unloaded his whole gun and all he did was shoot one guy in the arm.

a 12 gauge manual pump action shotgun is best for home protection. the reason is you will rarely need to shoot it---just pump a shell into the chamber and your intruder will hear it and quickly leave. 2nd choice would be a double barrell 12 gauge, but this only allows 2 shots. but do some practice shooting first so you get the feel of it. |

just had a break in here over the long weekend. Busted the door but they didn't stay long, emptied 1 drawer and then bailed it looks like. I'm looking into taking target practice and getting all my permits necessary to own a handgun but they are pretty strict here. In Quebec I need to take 2 courses just to go to a firing range and take lessons.

As for shotguns, a 12 guage anything with buckshot will be just fine. Just don't get slugs if you've never had a gun because you'll miss and get beat down. |

One in six parents say they know a child who accidentally shot himself or herself with a gun [Harvard School of Public Health].
Suicide is nearly 5 times more likely to occur in a household with a gun than in a household without a gun. [Kellerman, A.L. et al., N Engl J Med 327, 1993.] In 1996, 2 people were murdered by handguns in New Zealand, 15 in Japan, 106 in Canada, 213 in Germany, and 9,390 in the United States. [FBI Uniform Crime Report] Guns kept in the home for self-protection are 43 times more likely to kill a family member or friend than to kill in self-defense. [ Kellermann and Reay, N.E. Journal of Medicine] |

False statistics..... Anyway, if your method of home defense is to make a stand from your bedroom or something then nothing beats a shotgun. The myth that a shotgun pattern spreads so that you can hit something easier is true, but not at distances so close as to what you would encounter in your home. It doesnt have enough room to spread well. If you are going to attempt to "clear" your house to see if there is any intruder, then you do not want a shotgun. the confines of your home make the shotgun impractical for clearing a house, and easier to have your weapon taken away from you. A pistol works better for "clearing" an area that is somewhat confined space wise. If you are going to clear your house, then you must be aware of weapon retention. Its much easier to take a shotgun away from someone than a pistol. Head the advise of those who posted previously about ghostring sites and tritium inserts. You WILL need them in a dark environment. Make sure the barrel of your shotgun is 18 and 1/2 inches long, not just 18. Not trying to pick a fight with dice about it, but it has to be 18 and 1/2 inches. Also know that a gas operated shotgun has less recoil than a pump shotgun, due to the fact that the recoil system on a gas operated gun uses the gas to cycle the next round. As far as shotgun choices. there are many good brands out there. Mossberg, Reminton, Winchester, Benelli, Beretta, Franchi, are all some great makers of skatterguns. Also make sure that if you go with a pump action gun that you get one with dual slides Finally, too many people think that as long as they have a gun, then they are safe. Make sure you train with the damn thing on a regular basis. Find a combat firearm training facility in your area. If you are going to own a gun, then it is your responsibility to know how to use it, and when to use it. I have been to a few various training centers. I THOUGHT I knew about using guns. I learned alot from these guys. The tactics they teach are the same things they teach to swat teams and military factions. The reason is because they guys who teach these courses are also teaching the swat teams. I suggest Thunder Ranch, T.D.I., or Gunsite, I have been to all three. The info they teach puts you so far ahead of other people that it really makes for an unfair fight when it comes to "clearing leather".

If you're living in a residential area, shotguns (with buckshot) are much safer for your neighbors than a pistol. There's much less chance of stray projectiles going through walls & doing any significant damage. The shot is so light it loses most of it's momentum by the time it passes through a wall where as a bullet would be far more dangerous. Not to say that a stray shot can't do damage, just that it's less likely to do so.

fact1: semi autos recoil less than pump guns
fact2: shotgun spread will not matter more than a couple inches in an area no bigger than 15 feet. "which is usually the size of a large room. fact3: the more you are confined in an area, the smaller your weapon should be so that you may manuever and retain weapon easier. fact4: read previous thread someone posted about gun. dont fucking asked who started the thread or thread title, I dont fuckin know. I'm too lazy and too busy to type the whole thing over again. Basically the Kellerman stat about "43 more times likely" was expanded upon by kellerman himself later.
