Buying healthy food such as vegtables and lean meat is probably more cheaper than McDonalds, it's not expensive. Only thing is that it's an acquired taste and some lazy people prefer McDees because it's faster and more convenient.

Plus you don't need a gym membership to work out, hell I HATE working out in public in front of people. You can easily work out in your own home, or if you don't mind working out in front of people just go to the park and jog... Lazy people always make excuses!

Also poor people from what I have seen do not know how to manage money. They may only get paid hourly and would spend their money on stupid useless shit they don't need at ALL. From what I've seen lots of poor people have bad financial skills. If you gave them a million dollars they wouldn't know how to save it or invest it. They think the whole point of having money is to spend it; they have no class whatsoever.

Not all poor people are like that tho. Some know how to really stretch a dollar and manage their money wisely.

It depends more on class tho. Not all poor people are low class. Some can actually be well educated and have a degree but not make a lot beause of their profession or because they are in grad school. Those people tend to be more "classier" and know how to manage money and carry themselves very well.

And then you have the obnoxious poor people who like to spend all their money on flashy jewels and ghetto designer clothes...

People are poor for a variety of reasons. Not all poor people are lazy, crime prone or engage in the activities you described. Oftentimes, they carry the effects of bad decisions of people that came before them. My mother's family was dirt poor but through hard work, planning, and sheer personal will she and her siblings made out okay. The key thing about poverty is that even if a person is MATERIALLY poor, he or she should not allow themselves to become MENTALLY (as in attitude and outlook) poor as well. My mom and her family may have had to ration themselves 1 cup of rice a day for food but they never accepted their poverty and always strove hard to better themselves through education, work opportunities and starting small businesses. This is the kind of mentality that got them from a slum in Manila in the late 60's-early 70's to middle-class homes in California.

Because from their perspective, rich people made their money off the working backs of the poor.

And one more thing... not all poor people blame rich people for their plight. That's an EXCUSE mentality that will just make a person poorer. My mom never blamed her poverty on rich people. She always said... if you want to become rich, you CAN be rich. Just work hard, think hard, and do the best you can. Never make excuses for your own failure and always BELIEVE IN YOURSELF.

No government program or amount of government aid can produce that mentality. It has to come from the person.

And he probally pays them $5.15 and hour and yet can't figure out why they can't pay their bills. But it's not HIS fault. :winkwink:

However back to the US and New Orleans, when you are looking at the news coverage look to see how many cars you can see. To me it seems most of those with cars got out, very few left and the ones I see look to be driven in after the storm.

Now look at the elections and the promises the candidates make. They all promise the same, to cut taxes. So how are the por to get a good education with the rich cutting funding? The answer is the parents take it on themselves to educate the children.

My parents were poor when they left their country after WWII, they were poor when they came to Canada. I am amazed at the fact they did not speak english and yet BOTH my mother and father were able to find employment to support themselves, three children and an aging relative. They worked hard, made sacrifices and eventually landed on their feet never once using social assistance. Not once did they complain. I am amazed when I hear how many people are on welfare or mooching off the system when some, not all - are able bodied english speaking citizens. We are all presesnted with opportunities - its what we chose to do with them that can change our lives.

Maybe because they felt hopeless, or maybe the world is just a little unfair... why it has to have rich and poor people... why not equal to all, right?

My parents also came from working class and raised themselve to middle class. It can be done. But as your mother will tell you it's tough and not all succeed.

28 years ago I was bankrupt and had bailiffs taking away the furnture. Today my biggest worry is whether to buy a BMW or Merc, could buy something better but still feel guilty about the prices, I buy for cash.

But any of todays poor are not equipped to compete in todays world, they lack the skills and temprement. Either you are prepared to change it or you have to sit and watch the money it will cost you in the long run.

This thread is about Katrina and the people left in New Orleans. Most of them left did not have the abilty to get out. The cost would have been a few million dollars to lay on an enormous convoy of coaches. Because this was not done the cost of putting it right will be billions. A stitch in time saves nine.

Wel y see a lot here don't realise this. Imagine how much a fruit picker, maid or gardner would cost if it were not fro the poor. Who would pay $20 an hour to have their lawn mowed?

You can't vote in goverment after goverment who promise less taxes and expect those at the bottom of the pile to crawl out on their own. They lack the basic skills to do so.

Different world and time. After WWII many nations were screaming for people to come and replace the people who had died in the war. Getting a job even with bad language skills was relatively easy. Todays world is different.

Employers who don't employ people based on the home address, color and accent is one way.
