Anarchy In New Orleans

I was in Russia in 1998 when nearly all the banks closed, people were rational and nobody burned anything, no riots, no bloodshed. At least, I didn't see any. Russians, even though they can turn the simplest things into difficulty for themselves and others, and perhaps because of their daily difficulties, endured the 1998 crisis like champions.

I always said that if it were the US, people who never had a dime in the bank would none the less burn down cities, let alone the people who actually lost money, because they would feel empowered to react, and because we Americnas are used to being in control, used to comforts, and used to getting what we want. We have no capacity to endure hardship.

In the of the disaster in New Orleans, with the economy bad for many poor people, people who have little to loose in normal times- those from all regions of the the US- will take up the cause. Not really the cause, but the excuse of a cause, and import the anarchy to their region.

Anarchy is an expressway to change, and if you have nothing, change is desired.

It's bull**it, its an excuse, but it could happen.

Its not racial, but it is symptomatic of a society weakened by 'rights' and privleges-for rich and poor- without corresponding respondsibility. Now the Americans will react and claim that I am not patriotic. Well I'm not a blind patriot. When I see something that is wrong-like Iraq- I question it. But in this case, my heart goes out to these people, but my head tells me that this may be the ingition point for a class struggle. I hope not.

------I agree... although I have to say while I do not "hope" for the class struggle, I do hope for the change that such an event would (hopefully) bring... the system is clearly no longer working properly, on all levels.
