Hurricane Katrina has inflicted more damage to Mississippi beach towns than did Hurricane Camille, and its death toll is likely to be higher, the state's governor said Tuesday.

Camille killed 143 people when it struck the state's coastal counties in 1969 and a total of 256 after it swept inland.

"There are structures after structures that survived Camille with minor damage that are not there any more," Gov. Haley Barbour told reporters in Jackson.

Katrina destroyed "every one" of the casinos that raked in a half-million dollars per day to state coffers, Barbour said after a helicopter tour of the affected areas.

"There were 10- and 20-block areas where there was nothing -- not one home standing," he said.

Barbour would not give a confirmed death toll, but said it was likely to be higher than previous reports of 50 to 80 dead. (Full story)

Jason Green, of the Harrison County Coroner's Office, said funeral homes in Gulfport had received 26 bodies since the storm passed Monday.

In the small town of Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, search-and-rescue crews put paint marks on homes known to contain bodies, because there weren't enough refrigerated trucks to remove the corpses.

In Biloxi, an employee of the city's Grand Casino was awed by the extent of the damage.

"I was a senior in high school when Hurricane Camille hit, in 1969, and I have never seen destruction of this magnitude," said Scott Richmond.

Part of the city's sea wall was washed away, and nearly every downtown building had extensive damage to its first level.

State emergency management officials said 80 percent of the state's residents had no power.

In Biloxi, a 25-foot swell of water crashed in from the Gulf of Mexico Monday and inundated structures there.

Up to 30 people are believed to have been killed when an apartment complex on the beach collapsed in the storm.

Distraught resident Harvey Jackson told a local television station about losing his wife in the floodwater as they stood on their roof. (Watch the video report of a husband whose wife slipped from his grip -- 1:07 )

"I held her hand as tight as I could and she told me, 'You can't hold me.' She said 'Take care of the kids and the grandkids,' " he sobbed.

Streets and homes were flooded as far as 6 miles inland from the beach, and looting was reported in Biloxi and in Gulfport, Mississippi, officials said.

new orleanians get told to "leave" about once every couple years, and since 1969 it hasnt been necessary to do so, cry wolf so many times... and 80% of the people there actually did leave, in a metropolitan area of 1.6 million people (n.o and surrounding parishes) thats a pretty high # of evacuees.

How about the crippled people who cant drive, walk, talk, wipe their own asses, wanna prop them up on the side of I-10 so they can "thumb it" out of town?

It's not as easy as just hitching a ride out of town, as much as you might like to think it is, it's not. And 80% of 1.6M SAFELY evacuated is pretty fucking impressive. A lot of people helped you out when you needed it and didn't tell you to "thumb it"

a human can only live 3-4 days without water...which isnt hard to find in a flood. Even if it;s salty fresh rain collects in things. Humans are just generally shit...I dont get the surprise by everyone over the shooting/looting.

new orleans always has shootings, katrina didn't change that, just the fact that 2 million news crews are now there it gets noticed. Last 10 or so years NOLA has been in the top 5 if not #1 in murders per capita for the country, these aren't hurricane related events. Had Katrina not rolled through New Orleans yesterday I'd be willing to wager the same amount of people, if not more would have been shot, it wouldn't have been on the news and not a single one of you would have given a flying fuck.

looting is another story, in any major city with a large minority population when disaster strikes, it happens. These events also arent exckusive to new orleans. Do I agree with it? no. Do I understand it? yes. If you couldnt get out of the city and watched your house wash away, all your worldy possessions with it and now have your 6 kids to feed, what would you do?

But I'm sure you've never stolen anything in your life right? Anyway, thats ALL besides the point, I wasnt commenting on your "would there still be looting" comment, I WAS commenting on your ignorant ass "how hard is it to stick out your thumb" comment. I find it mildly amusing, being 99% sure you've never seen/witnessed/been effected by anything of this magnitude and feel obligated to offer expert advice from 1600 miles away. "stick yer thumb out and catch a ride" great advice pr0, why didn't you mention this the day BEFORE the hurricane hit, i'm sure it would have saved lives and prevented the looting
