My site is getting 3 Mb/s bandwidth...webhost suggestions??

Hi,

My site keeps going down and I had tech support look into it. Here's what they said:

Quote:
I have found the problem. In a nutshell, the server is too busy. You ordered
768 Kb/s of bandwidth, but with the pipe opened just to test things, it
quickly rose to nearly 3 Mb/s. That means there are requests for about 4
times as much data as your bandwidth cap will allow. To enforce the bandwidth
cap, our traffic shaper has to severely delay the traffic and drop a lot of
packets. That is why the connection seems so slow. That's also why Apache is
spawning so many processes. My only suggestions are to lower the bandwidth
usage somehow or increase your bandwidth cap.
I have a dedicated server at tera-byte -
http://tera-byte.com/ded.html

Can anyone beat those prices?

Thanks for any advice or help!

Kisses,

Jade

why don't you just buy more bandwich where you're at? It sounds like that's the only problem.

768kbps (or 243 gb) for $487 is pretty expensive. I'm sure you could find better.

Try these guys:

http://www.datahosters.net
http://www.energyhosting.com
http://www.phatservers.net
http://www.dynamichosting.com
http://www.mach10hosting.com

Try ICQing a few of the guys from those companies. They'll cut you a good deal..

Hi,

If I stay where I'm at bandwidth will cost me $1950/month. I am hoping to find something more affordable!

Thanks,

Jade

I agree, it is expensive, but Tera-byte has a good network,
and they are useing several Tier-1 providers so they use good
quality bandwidth. Sometimes the security of knowing your with a good established company on quality bandwidth with excelent
tech support is worth the extra cost...

just my

If you're getting that much traffic, look into
a) killing any traffic leaches
b) optimize your content to minimize BW burn

Once you do a) and b) and still need more BW, its time to move.

I learned the 2 step process above the hard way.

If they're Tier 1 and putting you on a good machine that's a fair price. Ya get what you pay for! If you go for less than $2 a gig you'll get far worse performance most likely.

Chubby Dedicated:

? Pentium III 933MHz
? 512 MB RAM
? 2 x 18GB SCSI HD
? 2 IP's
? Apache Webserver
? 10Mbps Uplink

Monthly Fee: $725.00
Setup Fee: $350.00

Bandwidth: .60/GIG !

Would I be correct in saying that you want $725/month just for the server and another .60 cents a gig for bandwidth. You could buy that server for the initial payment you want.

Well if you paid for that server and used 1000GB you would be paying $1235.00 a month or $1.23/GB in total. I dont think thats overpriced but if you think thats to much then you always have the option of using our virtual hosting for $.75/GB flat.

Other hosts charge $300/month for the server and $1.50-2.00/GB so you would pay $1800-2300 or $1.80-2.30/GB for the same type or in some cases a smaller server.

Still think thats to much well then we have a special deal for the guys here on GFY..

Lease a Dual Pentium III 933MHz from us and we will give you a full "Unlimited 10Mbps" of bandwidth for $1500 a month. This is a prepaid offer and it only applies to our Dual Servers.

*This offer is good for 1 week from today.

Damn... this thread is getting long quick.

I'll add my 2 cents. we've got machines at a few places including sextracker and dynamichosting.

Dynamic Will definately be able to satisfy your price...and they have great support. Been there for a year now... I don't think we've ever had a problem with the network.

Do your math.

If your paying $3.00/gig my friend your getting fucked in the ass. I have no clue how you came up with that dollar amount. My point was that for the initial payment of 750+350=1,100 I could just buy the server an co-lo it somewhere and I wouldn't be paying anywhere near $3.00/gig, more like under $1.00/gig

ONS, I wasn't getting down on your company; I just thought that $750/month for a server without any bandwitch included was kind of steep. That works out to $9,000/year in server rental fees alone. That deal you just put up looks like a sweet one and If I needed a new host I would certainly give you a try. I might just give your virtual account a try though at $.75/gig for some gallery posting.

My 2 cents - pick phatservers. I've dealt with E-van and his customer service is top notch. As far as the other hosts that "claim" they will beat any price... when I emailed phatservers deal to them...every single one of them bowed and said they couldn't touch the price.

Addition to last message...E-van, look like I might need another server in the very near future...if you still have my email address, I'd be interested in hearing more details on your offer above to make the deal even sweeter.

I don't use ICQ at all, so email is the best approach.

Hi,

It seems it's not so much of a bandwidth problem as it is a problem of someone running through a dictionary of usernames trying to guess the right one. My log is showing thousands of attempts each with a different ip address. Anyone know how to stop this? I joined pennywize but it's not catching it since it's showing a different ip address.

Anyway, I still want to move to a new webhost.

Can anyone offer this or better:

Pentium III 1GH, 512 MB Ram, 20 GB HD, 250 - 300 GB Bandwidth for less than what I'm paying at tera-byte ($487.50).

Kisses,

Jade

It is a bandwidth problem. If you got a plan with 250-300 gigs of bandwidth and you cap it, your situation wont change.

What your techs are telling you is right on with what your explaining.Your spiking to 3mb/s thats about 900 gigs you need. Are you running a paysite with movie downloads and such? if so you need burstable solution and not cap your bandwith. Capping makes most lose more money than they think they are saving..because once your smashing your cap......no one can connect worth a damn to your site and they leave, thus losing you money.

Moose,

I agree with what you say but the huge bandwidth was due to my site being listed on a couple free password sites with users sharing passwords. Since joining pennywize.com these shared passwords have been banned and now my bandwidth isn't nearly as high.

capping is a terrible idea if you are running a paysite on the bandwidth.
