I made a good amount of money last year working hurricane cleanup in florida. Best advice is to wait till it passes then get as close as you can. first at LEAST 24 hours will only be for first push efforts to clear roads etc. The contracts to get this done are already in place and ready to go. And this is for areas that arent under water.

Offering to help your fellow man is a noble gesture.
But... How can you afford time off work but not afford a plane ticket? Will you be bringing a backhoe with you? It hasn't hit New Orleans yet. Has there been a call for volunteers from out of the area? Do you have needed skills? ![]() edit:nm maybe you are going there to make money ![]() |

The gravy job to get with hurricane cleanup efforts is as an inspector. See since we are dealing with usually DOT/Government/FEMA money there always has to be an inspector. To make sure the contractors doing the cleanup arent doing anything underhanded. It may take some researching to find out which companies got the contract but it can be worth it. $20/hr 100 hours/week plus a per diem of like $150/day can be had if you get in with a decent company.

In 7 counties I worked all of dot dist 1, every owner was out there actually working on of his pieces of equipment or trucks. I for one do not own any heavy equipment or trucks. So again I say it was pretty good considering the circumstances. We also hired most inspectors from the actual areas that were hard hit. Putting money back into the pockets of alot of those people that had felt the destruction.
