how do i install this firmware for my dvd rw drive

im not a computer whizzkid and this is seriously the first time i ever tried to intall so called firmware for my dvd writer... and ofcourse it doesnt work. I love pc's.

I got the Pioneer DVD RW DVR-108
i just figured out i got it with upgrade number 1.14, so i d/l upgrade 1.20 to get it up to date.
Now i downloaded this exe file that has a winrar icon, this is the update.
When i click on it it asks where i wanna install it "Destination folder".
I dont know where it is. I did a search on my pc for 'pioneer' and 'dvr' etc and i still dont know anyhting on how i have to install this... why is there nowhere a fucking clue, a fucking readme file or whatever that tells me how to install this shit? Why the fuck do they make this only accesible for people who already know how this works? I dont understand this.

HELP ME SOMEBODY

The file You have is probably a self-extracting RAR-file.

Just run it again, create a new folder (right-click -> New... - name it whatever you like), let the program unpack the files to that location...
Then, just go to that folder and run the utility which should take care of the upgrade.

Not that tricky really

i unpacked it in a new folder, and it unpacks without probs.
But then i click on the file that has to upgrade it and it doesnt work, i get a dos screen popup with the following message:

Quote:
///ODD Firmware Update Utility Ver2.23B

Available target is not found.
So somehow it cant find the file it has to upgrade, and i dont know where the hell that file is or even what kind of file will be updated... Is it in the Windows folder? Do i have to put the intallation file in that folder? Etc. No
installation instructions whatsoever.. And btw thanks harmon but i already saw that page and thats for another version... the start looks like my upgrade but it doesnt ask what drives etc. in my version, it just shows me that dos window i just described...

Most firmware upgrades you have to run from Floppy disk, or at least use a dox box.

And often it works like

filename.exe d:\drivenname etc

Why do you want to upgrade ????

Your DVD writer doesn't function properly...

If it does, leave it alone... Same for Bios of MotherBoards... mainly when " you are not a computer whizzkid "

this means filename.exe gets executed in the d:\drivername folder right?
I just tried it and still it gives me the same message.

btw.. did you get the firmware right from pioneer or is it one of the hacked versions?

when you extracted... were there 2 files? (one .exe and one.120)

if you grabbed a hacked version, try the pioneer version.
http://www.pioneeraus.com.au/compute.../firmware.html

never had a problem updating mine before i tossed it... but my last upgrade was to 114.. and that was like a year ago..

Follow the Readme.txt file instructions explicitly to prepare and execute the upgrade. All upgrades must be executed with the system in[b] true DOS mode. (NOT from within a DOS Window).[/b/

It is recommended to boot the system into DOS mode via a Windows start-up floppy disk.

yes its official, i tried the link you gave too and it still gives me that same message... very weird..

Am i doing this right though? Meaning the folder where i execute the update exe file doesnt matter? Or do i have to execute it in some folder where the file that needs to be updated is in? If so, where can i find that since you had the same thing?

finally found some useful info on the link truth hurts gave with some install instructions and it does say it has to be done in the real dos mode when it fails in windows.. gonna try it..

make a boot disk, using format in XP
copy the firmware update files
Boot with the floppy, then execute the file...

PS: maybe backup your actual firmware... never know

you shouldn't have to make a floppy for this.

if you can't get it to work.. head over to the pioneer forum at cdfreaks..

there are flashing tools you can grab.

http://club.cdfreaks.com/forumdisplay.php?f=87

heres a thread that looks like your exact problem?

That happened to my husband 5 years ago. He installed some firmware on a CDwriter and it never worked aftwerard. It would read normal disks OK but not CD-Rs and it wouldn't write.

That was one of the early CD-writers though.

Another thing You'll most likely need to do is to make sure the drive is configured as
a "master"-drive on the IDE-cable (the datacable it's connected to).

The data-transfer of the firmware to the drive is considered safer when such, rather than when it's configured as a "slave"-drive...

I'm guessing this is why You get the "can't find target"-error more than the utility not being able to find the firmware-file... that file isn't a target, the drive is.
The utility probably hasn't even got that far yet (looking for a firmware-file).

Also, I gotta agree with directfiesta ...
"if it ain't broke, don't try to fix it"

well, the problem is the media i use and the dvd writer combined. I think id better experiment with different brands/types of media first and then try updating the drive when its still fucked up, since this firmware update thing is pretty radical.
