Hurricane Katrina, anybody affected by it? also..Europe's Weather Disaster?

I figured a Katrina thread would be dominating the board.

All I've seen hit Florida was flooding like I couldn't believe. I thought the storm was done but the weather and news and feds are screaming from the rafters that this storm is now a Category 4 and could move to 5 before it hits Lousiana.

That's some scary shit.

Somethign this country just don't need.

Also, wtf happened in Europe? It's like one weather nightmare after another. This shit has been going on for several years now. It's way past getting scary.

Okay, scary thing just came over the news. Katrina is now a Category 4 and it's at NIGHT. If it's that fucking strong at night when the sun comes up it could easily kick it up to a 5?

As stupid as this may sound and forgive me, but by 7am in the morning it should be a Cat 4 which is as ridiculous as it sounds is a lot less than what a Cat 5 can do.

Yes I know a Cat 4 is still a motherfucker to deal with.

Problem is the news says the heat of the water in the gulf is like 90degrees! That's some hot natural water! It's just feeding and feeding the storm! If the water is 90degrees on monday morning and the sun comes up 2 hours before it is supposed to hit? A Cat 5 is a strong possibility.

yes and if it happens that way thousand(s) will die.

For those of you who do not know about the "big one" in southeast LA, this is like Cali's 10 earth quake that is going to happen sooner or later.

New Orleans is about to get the eqivulant in devistation to that 10.0 earth quake.

WINDS are NOW 145mph

www.directnic.com is in downtown New Orleans.

What happens if they lose their internet connections?

Will all domains registered there eventually stop working?

Okay thanks for the info Will76 and KRL. I thought I was hearing things!

This shit looks way more fucked up than I could have imagined. I thought the thing would peter out and just dump some rain. This looks really bad and if I was anywhere near there I would haul ass like there was no tomorrow. Fuck that wait the storm out shit.

Let's hope a miracle happens and it dies out or something.

MikeAI said its located in the most secure building in NO and the building is supposed to be able to take a direct hit of a major hurricane.

However the head of the EOC said NO could be under water for up to 6 months
and be the most devasting storm ever to hit a major US city since its looking to be a Cat 5 by the time it hits. So I guess it becomes a question of how long the generators can keep on going if no power is restored for quite some time even if the building holds up.

They're saying now over 100,000 residents don't have the ability to leave as well as tourists still in the city who are clueless.

Unless this bitch does a last minute turn, I'd say NO is going to get wiped out and will be out of commission for many months.

Gadzooks, there are warnings all over the fucking radio and web and tv!

Talking about record tornado spawns!??? Unprecedented flooding???

If it's a Cat 4 or 5 when at landfall, by the time it rolls up the state and into the valleys it'll dump all kinds of shit.

Fucking Florida got drenched. People talking about they can't rebuild.

Real estate? Oil rigs?

Dies out? The fucker is getting stronger by the minute. The way its looking it might be a Cat 6 on landfall and about 200 mile wide path of complete destruction.

The bill for this one is going to make Andrew look like small change.

No shit!!! What news are you watching KRL I have to keep on top of this shit. My family doesn't bullshit when it comes to hurricanes. We get out of dodge even if it's a tropical storm.

If this thing rolls up into as far as the Ohio Valley it could cause unprecedented storm damage.

Yet to have N'Orleans out of commission for months on end is unheard of. I know the city is at water level already but gravity should flow the flooding back down into the Gulf shouldn't it?

The other fucked up thing is this one is going to be so strong and massive its going right into the heartland of the US and you're going to see flooding way beyond just in Louisiana.

Cat 6?? There is no Cat 6 designation! Highest is Cat 5. A storm that big can't make 200 mph. That's tornado speed.

The geography of NO is like a soup bowl so I guess it will have to evaporate and be pumped out.

Yeh, the Ohio valley is going to get an ass fucking too from this one.

At this size and speed its more like a 200 mile wide Super Tornado than just a Hurricane.

The weather experts are predicting winds will exceed 200MPH at the core point. So even though there isn't a Cat 6 it will be at that level.

Problem with the US and Hurricanes is you've got a never before seen amount of major population centers all over the US coastlines, so now there are more targets than ever for these things to bang into.

nothing is going to happen to the building, the first 3 floors will be under water but the building will remain standing. Now i dont know how those fiber lines run and how they will make it through thes storm.

I have my servers on the 4th floor of sturdy building with natural gas generators that kick on automatically. In theory this should work as long as the underground fiber lines stay in tack and the gas doesn't get shut off or lines burst. Who knows though, shit like this has obviously never been tested.

They are saying it might reach Cat 5 (155+) but hard for hurricanes to sustain that force for long, so somewhere between 140 - 155 is likely. BUt even at 145 still have gust to 175. and lots of tornadoes to the NE of where it hits.

Power and connectivity. They will need both for a long time.

What happens to domains that are registered there if they don't have one or the other?

What if the domain in question is actually nameservers that 100s of others domains use?

Will the 100s of domains stop working?

That's the latest story I got from the Drudge site. Notice in the story how they focus alot about the oil rigs and natural gas lines?

It validates an earlier thread I started last week that the price of oil could hit $100 soon.

http://www.gofuckyourself.com/showthread.php?t=507810

Just reading the statistics on this storm is enough to keep you awake at night. It's like Hurricane Andrew all over again. Wasn't it like 10 years ago for Andrew?

Okay, news said again, water can get as high as 20 feet. I thought N'Orleans was sea level but it's BELOW sea level like in Holland.

How are the pumps gonna handle that much water?

Swamp critters swimmin' through the streets?

This is truly fucked up.

we have the best drainage system in the world, we can pump out 1 inch of rainfall an hour. Some of you don't get 1 inch of rain all month.

The problem is not the rain though, it's the storm surge. The levees wil not be able to keep the surge out, so image the entire ocean pouring over miles and miles of levees, and then filling up something that is below the normal sea level. you can't keep the gulf water out. when the gulf goes down you still have 20 feet of water sitting there, this will get pumped out but will take months.

A list of live webcams from N'Orleans. At least if the power holds out we'll get a chance to keep an eye on what's going on.

For comparison - the current winds of 175 sustained is the same as an F3 tornado - except that the path of this is 45 miles wide instead of a tornado being very narrow

The storm surge and the level of water in NO - if they are right about the hit point - will leave most of NO totally underwater except for the tallest office bldgs downtown - the real problem is going to be places like Kenner where they are right next to the lake and the levees - and is where the international airport is - and all the chemical plants that will get knocked out - just too much to control at once.

Figure it will be in the right hand quadrant as this storm comes in so it will be hit pretty bad - most people are evacuating right now

News is also saying that people trying to evacuate finding gas stations out of fuel. Tempers are flaring. Could get ugly real fucking quick. Worst case is tornadoes arrive before the 'cane.

Camille had sustained winds of 200+. They don't know what the highest gusts were because it destroyed the equipment that measures it.

The pressure is already lower than with Camille - as far as I can see this is now the 2nd most intense hurricane recorded.

Biloxi is currently OK. If they get a bulk of this storm I forsee some totally trashed casinos. Although they are nicely disquised as big buildings they are all in fact floating barges

You are the first person I thought about when I heard of evacuations on the news over here.

The problem with pumping the city of NO - and Ive seen a lot of people saying hat the pumps will keep up with this - ya gotta have electricity to run the pumps - and although there are generators as backup - you have to be able to get to the pumps to refill the generators - and all of this assumes that the lines dont go down - and then at best they can pump 1 inch of rain an hour - with this storm they are looking at 15-20 in of rain an hour
Of course none of this counts the storm surge - the latest waves in the edge of the storm were just recorded at 55 ft - so those would be on top of a storm surge of 20 ft - sounds like the 5th floor might be a little safer

This is not looking good for New Orleans and for the rest of the ecomony.

1) Housing market going south
2) Oil prices through the roof (add this cities destruction & impact on oil and industry at large)
3) Continued siffoning of resources to Iraq, war on terrorism, etc...yada yada
--escalation in Iran possible
4) Serious potential for the bird flu to jump out of the box within the next 1-5 years or sooner

I know it's looking very 'gloomy & doomy'

So today I'll focus on & try to figure out where the silver linings are, they gotta be in there somewhere...

Wow, TheJimmy showed up!

Dude, I hear ya! When Andrew hit it was like Godzilla on crack.

Looking at the shape the world is in, a guy trying to get made has to keep on his toes. This business for me is a cakewalk. I now realize I must spend more time and effort on it. If I did that for 6 months I could put away enough dough to roll like a mo' into real estate far, far, easier than the average joe or jane.

People are fucking up the planet and society faster than they can rebuild and forgetting about shit like natural disasters.

Work, stash your dough and get your provisions and weapons and keep your powder dry.

Hell yes man! Andrew was freaky, saw a big rig/trailer thrown sideways into a building on the base down there. Remember it like it was yesterday, it was nuts.

Forgive me for feeling like I need to get my tinfoil hat on, but there are just far too many indicators of potential shitstorms out there on many levels...

Not sure why my crazy ass is considering a move to a desert again, but I got the stashing shit high on my priority list. If this type of shit isn't motivation enough for people to kick their game into overdrive I don't know what is.

Apparently we must be tuned into the same channels cuz your posts lately are pretty right on.

Here's a link that gives some hope to the correctly of oil pricing though, apparently an OPEC figure things the high pricing lately are NOT reflective of the market fundamentals. I take his word for it as I'm sure he knows his market capacities. Some of our market is getting freaky on the psychological level, but who doesn't know that a large part of trading/investing is based on pscyh...strange really when you look at it...

http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=stor.../kuwait_opec_2

but then you look at these about the housing market from greenspan and the one about the overall debt factor impacting the economy it's like fuckkkkk, I need some silver lining dammit, you're freaking me out

http://business.timesonline.co.uk/ar...752866,00.html

oh well...keep working, stash your shit like you said for sure, and find the pockets of gold in the shitstorms on their way...
