Since it is now a Caat 5 with 160 mph winds I would be out of there right now - last time NO was hit with this size storm (well - they never have) This is the worst case that was always feared - NO will be under water and they are saying that if it is a direct hit probably tens of thousands of deaths

I wouldn't be there! I'd be hightailing it as fast as I could, and there's no way in hell I'd ever live in Florida. How many times can you get your shit all fucked up before you move?

Just an update - they just found the pressure has decreased to 910 mb in the center which makes this stronger that Andrew and the same as Camille - the second strongest storm ever - with winds already at 160 mph

just the lower the pressure, the more powerful a storm is usually.

when pressure drops, it usually means a storm is coming.. i think normal summer days pressure is around 1000 to 1005 mb.

i would stay, ive never bothered to evacuate when they asked. I don't worry much about hurricanes

though this storm (908mb) has almost reached Andrew size now (922mb). this one might be a doozy

I'm pretty sure this one is way beyond Andrew - gusts at 200+ mph

I love storms, their fascinating to me.. and its something I would love to watch being so intense.. but theres absolutely no way I would stick around for that one, If I was in the area I would be doing everything in my power to get out of there

I have tons of family there. No one is leaving.

We have sat out hurricanes since 1675 when we arrived here and settled Southern Louisiana.

I spent 3 weeks on Grand Isle during hurricane under 4 feet of water. Mandatory evac, my family is part of the rescue and support so we never leave - my family always uses its vehicles and stuff to help families in need or trouble.

good luck to all enduring this, but we have been through much worse. My grandmother taught us stories of Hurricane Betsy and Hurricane Camille, and I have seen tugboats moved by storm from water to sitting upright on land.

such is life.

I love storms. As much as I want everyone I care about to get the hell out of there, I would probably stay. Hell, the thought of seeing if I can get a really good deal on a room at the Beau Rivage and heading to Biloxi to watch has crossed my mind.........

Unfortunately (and Im not an alarmist) this storm is already worse density wise than Andrew and Camille - and if New Orleans takes the center - the people just west of there are looking at 20 ft of water rise - not just 4 feet of water - I was around during Camille and with this one being worse - I would already be on the road out of there
T
As I just heard on TV someone put it very well - this is not a TV show - with the attitudes of people thinking this is just a little fun to watch event - theyre going to be among those killed which right now looks like to be in the thousands if not more like 10s of thousands - because they "arent afraid of a little storm weather"
Folks - if you havent left yet - please do! Ill even put you up for free but get your asses out of there - 20 feet of water will put houses completely underwater - not just a little flooding

Back in 1969 when Camille hit there were only 259 deaths during the initial strike - it hit just east of where this one seems to be headed in a lower population area - again if this thing goes in at NO, with areas like Kenner where Lake Pontchartrain is right next door - there is a good liklihood that they will completely under water
Most of you werent alive during Camille - please just take my word that you dont want to be there
Here's a good link to info about these things
