I just read that Level 3 blocked Ogrish.com

If this is true then its a sad day in internet history. BW providers blocking sites is very bad imo. And hopefully theyre not starting a trend.
I really think its up to me which sites i want to see and not anyone else.

I bet within 10 years the internet will be a LOT more censored, this is the first wave and there isn't much we can do to stop it.

Yup. And if people dont do anything about it now, then it become "the norm".....

That would suck 10 years from now. China here we come!

maybe my views on right & wrong are a bit skewed

but uhhhh, showing dead u.s. soldiers might be just the medicine to show the american public right alongside those of the hero dropping a laser guided bomb on a munitions factory

its called the 1st ammendment, and if war & death is obscenity...our country was founded on obscenity and thus obscenity is covered

Underage content = generally illegal.
Dead and or mauled people and animals = perfectly legal content.

I never visit orgish as I have zero desire to see what they distribute. Though I am doing what I have the right to do and that is not visit them. Nobody has the right to censor them in this country at least. In the US the freedom of speach is designed and set up to protect those that offend us and I would have it no other way.

you are 100% entitled to your own opinion, but everyone with the slightest common sense cant be surprised that they in time will ban sites like ogrish.. come on .. serious

If they in the future find a 100% bulletproof way to validate age on surfers, then fine, but as long as 9 year old kids can find those pages, then I really don't have a problem with ISP's closing it down...

but again... you are entitled to your own opinion..

I think your missing the point, this is the start of the censorship of the internet. This is NOT a good thing, sure its fine when things you agree with are being censored but I doubt you would feel the same way if things like porn, gambling etc became censored as well.

Thats the point of this thread

Just because its legal, doesnt mean its a good thing to do, or someone SHOULD do it. There should be things like common sense and taste, that is more important than what is legal

.. just my .. It would be fine by me if they closed sites like that down

Will not say someone should do it or it is a good thing to do. I am just firmly stating that they have every right to do what they do even if they offend everyone in the process.
Offensive speach always needs to be protected. Specially considering what anyone does is generally offensive to someone and it would never just stop with one person being silenced.

The start? hahaha - you must be kidding.. there have been censorship since the day the internet started. Warning pages, 2257, who-is info, visa-rules, local government laws, minimal ages... its all censorship. And why should the internet be any different than any other media? Why not the same laws as magasines or news chanals?

do you think they would make a ogrish chanel for TV? i don't think that would ever bee allowed - and hope not

No - I dont think porn hurt a child the same way, but I still don't want my kids to watch porn... seeing a man ripped apart, dead people with blood all over yes.. that is bad.

you can get pretty good sex filters today. I have installed server based filters at some of out customers that don't want people to surf porn during work-hours, but there isn't any "ogreish filters"

I dunno but don`t you think maybe ogrish is the first step? I find it funny that an adult webmaster can find a reason to support censorship of a site even if he finds it lacking taste...

exactly...any form of censorship of an image or audio, or text should be protected under the 1st

unfortunately some people like sick shit, it doesn't mean we should ammend it

No, not at all. I think the overall plan is to set the same rules for the internet, as there is for magazines and television channels, and I don't have a problem with that.

with freedom of speech, comes a responsibility - if we cant handle that, the freedom will be taken away.

Its like handguns - the reason why its outlawed a lot of places in the world, is because people cant handle the freedom.

thats my

Whether content is legal or illegal, business owners have the right to distance themselves from anything they consider pornographic or otherwise undesirable.

I don't have a whole lot of patience with people getting on the censorship bandwagon. Movies, TV and the print media are censored. There are laws dictating what you can do in your own home, never mind in public. So if you really give a damn about censorship, there are many more worthwhile issues with which to concern yourself. Of course, most of them won't get you sig placements.

From a business point of view, supporting (and tolerating is supporting) extreme sites is foolish and short-sighted. If you operate "regular" porn sites you gain nothing from such support and they make the perfect target for interest groups which won't hesitate to brand less extreme sites with the same label, given half a chance.

Isn't a lot of the stuff featured on Ogrish considered "snuff" content? IIRC, that's right up there with CP, maybe even worse. I'm just surprised the site has been up for as long as it has w/o attracting much attention.

a German organization called "Jugendschutz.net" has been pressuring the American IP Carrier Level3 to block access to the Ogrish.com IP. Without an official legal order Level3 Germany went ahead with the block.

Not only are many German ISPs affected by this unjust action, but ISPs in other European countries (who have nothing to do with the German legal system), such as Holland, France and Poland, are also being denied access because of this German block.

I hate sites like Ogrish.com and I'm pob the only one that hasn't seen one of those decapitating videos, and I'd like to keep that way, but Internet censorship is a really BAD news (talking about legal content)

I have to agree with ebus_dk though, there should be a way to prtect kids from viewing sites like that by accident (cause if they want to visit these sites nothing can stop them, the average 12 years old is much more computer savvy than his dad)

I dont believe in everything ogrish shows (by believe I mean thinking it should be shown re: other peoples misery etc.) however I do support there right to show it.

Ogrish may be on the extreme end but the censorship won't stop there. Next grey area sites will start getting banned.

No censorship as long as its legal.

Germany has been trying to block/shutdown Ogrish for a few years.

Once they got the domain locked from the registrar Joker.com
They turned it off when asked... no court order or anything.

Never use Joker.com for a domain registrar! FUCK Joker.com

i think ogrish is sick, but its legal so i dont think any bandwidth providers should have the right to censor it for other people to see.

I can get to it.

It's posted on their site:
http://www.ogrish.com/archives/germa...g_25_2005.html

German Level 3 and Jugendschutz Censor Ogrish.com
To whom it may concern,

It has recently come to our attention that several thousand European visitors have been denied access to Ogrish.com and we've received many complaints by visitors worried that we are blocking them.

Initially, we believed this to be due to a temporary technical problem, however now?three weeks later?Ogrish.com is still blocked. After thorough investigation, we concluded that a German organization called "Jugendschutz.net" has been pressuring the American IP Carrier Level3 to block access to the Ogrish.com IP. Without an official legal order Level3 Germany went ahead with the block.
Feel free to email Level3 at [email protected] or give them a call regarding this issue.

Not only are many German ISPs affected by this unjust action, but ISPs in other European countries (who have nothing to do with the German legal system), such as Holland, France and Poland, are also being denied access because of this German block.

This action is outright censorship and is not justified. Everything that can be seen on Ogrish.com is included in everyday life?it's grim reality presented in an unbiased way. Nobody is forced to look at this material and to discourage accidental viewing by sensitive or underage visitors, we have established a warning and age verification page for first time visitors. We may even consider a German-language warning page. However, please remember that limiting underage access to adult material is the responsibility of parents?and there's sufficient software to aid parents in this endeavor.

With the nature of the Internet and free speech, it is up to the population to decide whether or not to visit Ogrish.com?the government should not make that decision for them.

Germany is trying very hard to shut us down and the "Jugendschutz.net" organization previously contacted our advertisers and payment systems to try to do as much damage as possible.

Obviously we will fight against these ridiculous actions.

Sincerely,

Ogrish.com

Then don't let them surf the net unattended. Simple.
Few things piss me off more than people who want to take away my rights to protect their children.

Again, simple. If someone has "sex filters" at work but is so concerned with other sites their employees are surfing then don't filter out, filter in. Employees shouldn't have the time to surf that many websites on the job, so have them request that sites they wish to view on the job be added to the "allowed" filter. Hell, if you're that concerned with your employees morality just disable all web access not required for the job.
