Dunno about the whole universe thing, but I definately think a higher intelligence had a hand in laying the framework for humans. They fabricated religion in order to give our society more structure... put a little fear 'o god into us by resurrecting/cloning some guy and dazzling us with technology unheard of a few thousand years ago.
