Not possible I'm afraid.. there's no direct relationship between a .swf file and it's orginal source file. In fact, there's not even a way to determine what format the source code was in (flash,livemotion,proprietary).

On the OTHER hand, you can reduce it to it's primary elements (pictures/sounds/actionscripts) -- try this: http://www.swifftools.com/stools/ -- download SWF browser. You may also need a flash deprotecter depending on if it's password protected.

Flash is very hard and annoying to work with, you could spend many hours working on a site to find out later someone ripped off your work?

that's funny direktor(spelling?), but I have to say--FLASH is a very annoying program!
nothing about it is intuitive. It is very powerfull(again--spelling?) but the way they
laid put the program makes no sense whatsoever(is that a word?)

Guys,

Flash is alot easier to learn from scratch than photoshop is. I have been using flash for about 2 years now and I know all the actionscripting off by heart, I have been using photoshop for about 4 years. I know everything in that and flash was alot easier to learn.

With your question how you can find out how they made the .swf file, You can crack the code then see how they did it but not many people are willing to help you out with that as it is stealing someone's work.

You can import the .swf into flash then depending if they have a password on the .swf or not you can see how they made it. It will all be on one layer but still you will have an idea. If they have a password on it (if they are smart) then you cant do anything about from learn flash hard out like I did then you will finally learn how to do it.

Or give me a buzz and I will help you out, and tell you what you want to know about how he made it etc. I will not tell you how to crack .swf's with passwords but I will help you out by doing it then telling you how to make it ok.

there are SOOOOOOO many tutorials out there it would be easier to find one and do it than finding the shit to rip it off with..plus you'd actually learn how to do it so next time you wont have to look to rip off someon's IP.

BTW, about macromedia flush -- it sucks dick. Gotta be the worst mockup of a programming environment I've ever seen. The worst part isn't the unintuitive user interface, or any of that shit.. it's the fact that it doesn't work.

I just had to spend a month re-doing a catalog for one of my customers, because 4 flash commands didn't work in a certain context -- a KNOWN bug, but not a DOCUMENTED bug. Their documentation is garbage.

theres a difference between "reverse engineering" by someone with enough knowhow to see how something was done, maybe even learning a little as they do it and flat out stealing code and replacing images/variables/text.. if you don't value the knowledge you won't retain it for next time you need to come up with something..

books will have stuff thats "cutting edge" for people that have to steal code to do it.... whats the point of stealing cutting edge yugop or wireframe.co.za if you don't understand it?
