Need Advice On Dying Computer
This box is about to die - just finished uploading 10 gigs of important data files to a web server. So now all I wanna know is how to backup my Outlook Express folders and my ICQ contact list. Can i just save the mbx or dbx files to a disc? I have no clue how to save ICQ contact list - if i was to get a new computer and have my ICQ number does ICQ have my contact list on their server?
man is this thing making scary noises - death rattle - already shut itself off twice today - maybe it's just the power supply but i've been through too many fried hard drive disasters. thanks

Whenever I switch between my 2 computers my ICQ lists automatically update, so I'm assuming everything is stored on their servers.

if you use normal icq it is stored on their servers now. Outlook, export your email and settings to a file. then burn that to a cd or upload to a server. then download the new machine and import it.

I'm always scared the computer will die on me all of a sudden. Happened quite a few times in the past. Now I backup all my important files EVERY NIGHT and the rest on the weekends.

Hi Mutt. Been there, so I feel for you!
I've always installed the new software on the new computer, then copy the datafiles for both over, overwriting them. Worked for me each of three times (new computers) now.

thanks for the answers.
when I try to Export-->Messages in OE I get 'this will export messages to Microsoft Outlook or Microsoft Exchange' - um .... what's the point of that? anyway it gives me an error so i dunno - i just saved the dbx files to a disc. how much does a really good computer cost these days? one that will also be a video editing machine.

First of all, why aren't you backing up all your files on a second hard drive?
Or, why aren't you making CD's of all your important pictures, files, etc.? Why are you using Outlook for your email. Use Eudora. And finally, if your hard drive crashes, you can always take it to a lab and have your information retrieved............FOR A PRICE. Relax. You are a rich webmaster. Serge said you are a rich Canadian. ![]() |
