60 years !!

I'm very surprised that major US media sites aren't talking more of the 60th anniversary of the Hiroshima bombing
I just watched the news on Cnn and they barely mentioned it !!! I think that 140 000 civilian dead deserve more than this

Iraq. There. I mentioned over 100,000 dead civilians

Yeah, they should make more of a mention, but they are no longer a true news channel but an entertainment one.

I don't remember a peep from any of the world media on the 60th anniversary of the firebombing of Tokyo, in which 100,000 people lost their lives.

I also didn't hear mention of the anniversary of the rape on Nanking or the Bataan death march.

You can re-write history any way you want to.

I'd like to know how americans feel about this event nowadays. I've been browsing around to find some articles but nada !

I just spoke on icq with an american friend about this: he was sure the bomb was dropped by accident. Don't they teach this in american school?

You guys should really brush up on your history. These two bombs saved millions of lives.

Japan would have never surrendered. Never. They had been teaching their kids for generations that in their schools. Brainwashed that to surrender was a dishonor to their family.

The plan for dropping two so fast back to back was because they believed that Japan would have thought that we just had one bomb, and would have kept on fighting. Even after the bombings their top generals wanted to keep on fighting.

You can look back now and say we should have never have done it, but it was a different time. Attack the mainland, and kill millions on both sides, or drop the bomb and kill thousands.I for one would have made the same choice, knowing the true determination of the enemy.

if you would only know what japan military did with chineese people for example - you would understand the 6 Aug bombing. They killed too much civilians before they got bombed.
So, it was not for nothing.

Your arguments are stupid. If i follow you, the USA deserve what happened on 9/11 because of all the dead US Army caused ?
Nothing excuses the killing of innocent people.

Multiply that 'thousands' with 140+ plus the wounded plus the side effects...

Anyway, a third option would be to drop bombs outside the cities to demonstrate the power. 2 bombs, or more, would scare the shit out of them and it would demonstrate they really had the bombs. If they did not surrender, THEN they could do more drastic bombings. Nagasaki was strategic, but Hiroshima was slaughter.

Do you read any history books at all. The top military officials in Japan did NOT want to surrender after we dropped two nukes on their cities. Now why in the world would you think they would have done differently if they were dropped outside cities. Look up some of the island campaigns and see just how many were killed on both sides.

Believe me attacking the homeland would have been much much worse.

Yes, the military leaders did not want to surrender (unconditionally).
Yes, there would probably been more killed by invasion.

But the emperor overruled the military leaders and surrendered. It was also the russians invasion of Manchuria that lead to it. So same result could have been achieved without overwhelming kills. There are no moral justifications if you add this option.

This discussion really is moot. We have so much more information now. At the time they didn't even know if the bombs would work.

Hindsight is always better.
With what we know now, we would have invaded Russia when we were done with Japan, for gods sake.

I tend not to judge that generation too harshly, as they have shown time and again, that they were the WE generation.

The world is far from that now.

It was during a WW2 , what i mentioned , how it's connected to 9/11 ?
They attacked few countries during WW2 - understood ?
They got bombed because of these attacks and what they actually did with
civilians in these countries. As well as they got bombed because of stupid attck on PH. What is not clear here ?
You think it was too much ? May be yes and may be not, you can't change what's happened already, but Japan was an agressor at this time and attacked first.
End of story.

For those of you who have access to the Sundance Channel, they will be airing several showings of a new documentary film entitled, "The Original Child Bomb".

If I recall (I may be very wrong) we only had 2 bombs ready to go. If I remember it was going to take us awhile to make more at the time.

Hell now I need to read up on this again.
