Multiply that 'thousands' with 140+ plus the wounded plus the side effects...
Anyway, a third option would be to drop bombs outside the cities to demonstrate the power. 2 bombs, or more, would scare the shit out of them and it would demonstrate they really had the bombs. If they did not surrender, THEN they could do more drastic bombings. Nagasaki was strategic, but Hiroshima was slaughter.
