Google Sitemaps(beta) wtf?

WTF is this Google Sitemap crap I've seen mentioned elsewhere? Anyone care to fill me in?

It hasn't been very productive for me in my tests. Setting up more backlinks was faster and more productive than setting up a Sitemap.

And if you're doing anything that might be even slightly considered black hat using a Google site map may get you caught and dumped.

That's not something I've found from personal experience but others seem to have found that.
