Probono, when you write a new article in your blog and you have those dandy urls just listed in your "updates" list, it sends a "ping" to those urls, letting them know that you have a new entry. In this way, your new article is often picked up and sent out to bunches of readers. Pings = traffic. (Was that overly simplistic or just plain wrong, gang? I'm having a Monday today.)

I heard just using http://rpc.pingomatic.com/ is enough because it pings alot of important sites and if you use one of those big lists it's possible one of the ping services pings it twice and your site will be labeled a ping spammer. (?)
