Probono, when you write a new article in your blog and you have those dandy urls just listed in your "updates" list, it sends a "ping" to those urls, letting them know that you have a new entry. In this way, your new article is often picked up and sent out to bunches of readers. Pings = traffic.

(Was that overly simplistic or just plain wrong, gang? I'm having a Monday today.)
