It's all part of the giant pollitically correct pile of shit we sometimes have to deal with. If you have black history month you are sensitive to african americans. If you have white history month you would be a racist. The other day I got in a big argument with someone because I said that this girl was a mexican and they told me that was a racist thing to say. I said " I'm from america and I'm an american if someone is from canada they are canadian if you are from mexico you are mexican. . . " but somehow it seems that mexican has become a a bad word.

Personally I am sick of all the african-american, asian-american ect namesakes. to me it is simple. If you were born in this country, or you came to this country and are now a citizen then you are an American, nothing more nothing less and you are afforded the rights and privilages of being an American, nothing more, nothing less. The more people insist on being called by a specific name, the more they insist on being set apart from the group.

Oh, and I don't think it has anything to do with being politicaly correct, you see, Asians and Mexicans weren't taken to the US agains their will, they came because they wanted a better life. Actually, Black History month was created not just for the teaching of the history of black people but more for encouragement of black people & to change the 'negative black' perception in white people's minds (but it seems to only piss them off). They have been told that they were worthless since they came to this country so a month full of reprogramming those thoughts in the kids was, and still is, necessary. Without that you will continue to have an unbalanced amount of black people as compared to white people, fighting for low paying jobs.

Now, the need for this month isn't as necassary since you have so many prominent black people in America.

What's probobly needed more is Mexican American month. There are a lot of them here. Probobly more than white or black in some southwestern states! Unfortunately they are not working at a rate that matches their population growth rate. If you have never been to Mexico City, you would think that they all stand outside and wait for someone to pick them up to have them do yardwork. But you have plenty of incredible millionare businessmen in and from Mexico! The kids here need to see that and get a sense of self worth and encouragement from it.

It's not for show or bragging. There's a purpose behind it. But, if you look at it on the surface it would understandably make you mad. Just take heart in the fact that out of 414 pages in your average history book... 404 are for white history!

How exactly do you write a history for a culture who up until 200 years ago had no written language and had lived the previous 30k years unchanged? Its impossible to document your history when you do not have one.

Euro history is much more vast due to diversity and the fact that we have been literate for over 2 thousand years. Our history fills volumes upon volumes.

To push aside a thousand years of history in a book to cover a brief period in time for African American history would be a crime.

American history in general is short...
Let's not forget that this continent is not that old...

The reason why so called "White" history is so vast compared to "black" history, is because there were more continents of "whites" than of "blacks" , also, many of the "black" countries lacked written language & their histories & traditions were an oral history passed down from generation to generation..

Over the course of a few years, these oral histories & traditions were forgotten due to the upset of their culture, politics, freedoms, & way of life...

Let's not get confused with black history month..
It only applies to african american history..
Certainly, there are many international historical events regarding africans & other black cultures, but these are not generally included due to black history month being an american tradition..

Black history month was created to remember events that have occured in the month of february that have changed the lives of the american people of african descent, & to pay respects to the people that have spoken to inspire those changes, as well as to educate others of the sacrifices that were made to succeed in causing these changes..
To make others aware of the struggles, so that we can grow as a people, as a nation, as a country, & to learn by mistakes..

I read an article the other day that said that many school districts nationwide were thinking about altering their history lesson plans to be more "inclussive" so that african american students would learn about the contributions of black people in american history and mexican american students would focus on the contributions of mexian people in history. . . this just pisses me off. We have a checkered past, sure, but let's just teach the facts. I don't see any need to make everyone feel good about themselves.

TopTGP, I agree with you that black people (most of them originally ) didn't come to this country of their own accord but were brought here as slaves. But the ones currently living here are here on their own free will. they, most likely, have a better life then they would living in some 3rd world poverty and AIDS infested country. they have every opportunity to make as much of themselves as anyone else.

I do think our government should do something for them though. They should offer to give them a free trace of their family roots, find out what country they come from originally and when thier ancestors were brought here and then offer to pay their way back if they would rather live there. I think most people would choose here.

1. to tophats comments. europeans(whites to you) werent the only people that brought africans to the colonies. if you did some research, you'd find out that the majority of africans were caught by other tribes and sold to the dutch, portuguese, etc.. merchants

2. the racism here is pretty obvious here in columbia, sc. you may say its a redneck town or whatever. but, the university here has 25k students from around the us. all the fraternities are basically "whites only" or "blacks only". i grew up knowing only about 10 "black" friends, but i dont remember there being racial issues. in the states its weird. but, here in the columbia, you are either black and hang out with blacks only or you are black and hang out with only whites.

3. i think black americans lack nationalism. not from the states. but where they come from. i think it was stupid on their part to lump up a whole continent and partake it in their name "african american". if you called me a "european american", i'd look at you all funny. i dont have anything against the french or germans. but, if you tried to pass me off as being a frenchman or german, i might have to kick you in the nuts.

The reason why so called "White" history is so vast compared to "black" history, is because there were more continents of "whites" than of "blacks" , also, many of the "black" countries lacked written language & their histories & traditions were an oral history passed down from generation to generation.. Over the course of a few years, these oral histories & traditions were forgotten due to the upset of their culture, politics, freedoms, & way of life... Let's not get confused with black history month.. It only applies to african american history.. Certainly, there are many international historical events regarding africans & other black cultures, but these are not generally included due to black history month being an american tradition.. Black history month was created to remember events that have occured in the month of february that have changed the lives of the american people of african descent, & to pay respects to the people that have spoken to inspire those changes, as well as to educate others of the sacrifices that were made to succeed in causing these changes.. To make others aware of the struggles, so that we can grow as a people, as a nation, as a country, & to learn by mistakes..

kane Too lazy to set a custom title Join Date: Aug 2001 Location: portland, OR Posts: 20,684	I read an article the other day that said that many school districts nationwide were thinking about altering their history lesson plans to be more "inclussive" so that african american students would learn about the contributions of black people in american history and mexican american students would focus on the contributions of mexian people in history. . . this just pisses me off. We have a checkered past, sure, but let's just teach the facts. I don't see any need to make everyone feel good about themselves. TopTGP, I agree with you that black people (most of them originally ) didn't come to this country of their own accord but were brought here as slaves. But the ones currently living here are here on their own free will. they, most likely, have a better life then they would living in some 3rd world poverty and AIDS infested country. they have every opportunity to make as much of themselves as anyone else. I do think our government should do something for them though. They should offer to give them a free trace of their family roots, find out what country they come from originally and when thier ancestors were brought here and then offer to pay their way back if they would rather live there. I think most people would choose here. again just my

MrBrian Confirmed User Join Date: Mar 2001 Posts: 1,215	being born outside the states and now living in south carolina. i will make a few comments. 1. to tophats comments. europeans(whites to you) werent the only people that brought africans to the colonies. if you did some research, you'd find out that the majority of africans were caught by other tribes and sold to the dutch, portuguese, etc.. merchants also, your comment about asians never being taken against their will, what about the japanese relocation camps during wwii? 2. the racism here is pretty obvious here in columbia, sc. you may say its a redneck town or whatever. but, the university here has 25k students from around the us. all the fraternities are basically "whites only" or "blacks only". i grew up knowing only about 10 "black" friends, but i dont remember there being racial issues. in the states its weird. but, here in the columbia, you are either black and hang out with blacks only or you are black and hang out with only whites. 3. i think black americans lack nationalism. not from the states. but where they come from. i think it was stupid on their part to lump up a whole continent and partake it in their name "african american". if you called me a "european american", i'd look at you all funny. i dont have anything against the french or germans. but, if you tried to pass me off as being a frenchman or german, i might have to kick you in the nuts. __________________ ICQ #971-2561
