I agree whole-heartedly... that's my preferred mode of work... unfortunately, clients, most often, don't see it that way. Thus... the stress ensues.... and shit is created as a result of a deadline.

Believe me... I've put out some real crap because of "I HAVE TO HAVE IT NOW!!!!" Thankfully, all my current clients understand that excellence takes time.

Hey man, bring the business skills in here. get someone to do those "I-want-it-fast" sites. If there is demand, give it to them

If you're worried about your name, you can use my name if I get x% of the profits

No can do.... even if the demand is there... someone else can have it. Not everyone shares this philosophy, and most are just out to make the fastest buck they can. But I won't.

The crap sites I've put out are NOT in my portfolio because of that.... I simply won't do it anymore. My attitude is, if it's going out to the world, it better be worthy of the world seeing it. Or I might as well shut down now and go back to trucks. I'm here to make a fucking IMPACT. Not a rock from a slingshot.... but a crater from a fucking space rock with a five mile radius.

Yes.... business skills are essential... but should not take precedence over ethics.

My old man used ta tell me, before he left this shitty world.... "Whatever you do, even if it's cleaning toilets... be the best fucking toilet cleaner there is."

Well I'm the fucking Tidy Bowl Man.

mika 02-01-2002 04:24 AM

Cmon man the other day I wanted to buy my GF as many roses as I could afford. Then I thought there's always a guy who could buy more. And another guy who can buy even more etc etc. So I bought her seven.

So I have two points here
1. Quality over quantity
2. There is always someone who can do it better than you

World records wont last forever

Amputate Your Head 02-01-2002 04:25 AM

Try to please them all, you become a mess.
Try to please yourself only, you become a mess.
Please him/her/the one that is truly important to you and you will have a peace of mind.

One of the biggest... Ppl contacting me to 'fix' their layout because they do not even know how to set a table tag in HTML expecting to make a buck. When it takes 2 hours to fix their shitty frontpage coding, complain it took too long.... :ak47: :feels-hot

Wasn't born here, didn't grow up here, just livin' here.... but not for long... ;-)

-=HOAX=- 02-01-2002 11:48 AM

I did some growing up there...bleak man bleak...but then again I was jaded and duped by the public school system...so drugs was the only feasible alternative. I actually lived in Niles specifically...

Esta es para La RAZA!!! :boid Pinche Mujado Maricones!!!

But yea, It had its ups too...there used to be some great fishing in those ponds...heck even lake elizibeth...

Amputate Your Head 02-01-2002 11:50 AM

I'm right on Lake Eliz... you know there's a killer 9 hole executive golf course there now... one of the redeemed factors of living here.... I can walk 5 minutes to play golf at any given moment.

-=HOAX=- 02-01-2002 11:57 AM

NO SHIT!?!?! Can you still rent paddle boats and shoot at ducks with paintball guns? Is that crazy little jungle path wetlands experiment turned shooting gallery (and I don't mean guns here) still there? WHoa there was boat docks there and everything...What about the bigass peach orchard and mud pit pond behind fremont bart??? did they ever develop that?

I actually heard that Niles actually grew up/got cleaned up a bit...is that huge chemical factory still there? Munoz Liquors? Joe's Corner? Niles Station?

Niles is still the same.... biker town and antique shops. No bigger really, no smaller... just there.

Amputate Your Head 02-01-2002 12:01 PM

Niles Station is toast.

and the FPD is building a new jail behind their already massive dept building, cuz the other one is crumbling.

-=HOAX=- 02-01-2002 12:11 PM

WOW! Time has passed for sure...Niles elemetary? Centerville MS? Washington HS? Coyote Hills? What about Shinn Pond and all the quarries behind Niles elementary and Niles Park? Fully Developed or is that Alameda creek area still the Rapists Playground it was?

Amputate Your Head 02-01-2002 12:12 PM

oh, and dig this if you haven't heard.... Bart was approved for expansion to San Ho... so there will be transit all the way around the Bay now.

-=HOAX=- 02-01-2002 12:18 PM

Holly Shit...that's sweet...wish it was that way when a skateboard was my mode of transit...

Amp,

What do you think about the flashy doodads, (lil rivots, screws, wires, extra shit) that's becoming so popular? When you say you get what you pay for...well if one pay's for this stuff...do you think its justifiable in an earning sense...do you think those extraneous things pay for themselves? Do you think they contribute to the sales impact of a design or do you think they could Detract from the sales of a page? What is your stance on the line between a little sprucing up and a little overkill...?

I think it depends on how stuff like that is integrated into the design... there's lots of places to get pre made shit like that... stuff that really does look quite good all by itself. But if the doo dads themselves are the extent of the "design"... it's wasted. I've seen people actually find a nice looking gizmo or template, and just slap it up IN PLACE of a well thought out design. It just doesn't work that way.

That's a common misconception. Just because the rivets and shit look cool, doesn't mean it going to work. Stuff like that is NOT a design. A design is a thought out, planned combination of visual effects (shit that's pleasing to the eye), and subliminal "guiding". Color combinations, text placement, type styles, subtle backgrounding, texture..... all of that shit.

Watch some tv commercials. Do you think for a minute that they just found some cool looking shit and threw it up there? No. That shit is crafted in a way that makes you want to buy a service or product, even if you may not realize it.

Radio is exactly the same. Except it's done with sound. I used to produce radio commercials. It's an exacting science. You can't just toss in all the coolest sound effects because YOU like them... it's planned. Putting machine gun fire in a spot for vaginal cream would be considered overkill. And it won't sell the product no matter how cool it might sound. Radio spots all sound like fun & games when you hear it.... but that's the product of perfectly executed marketing.

Web Dev is no different. It's an art... not slapping up all the latest gizmos to see if they work. And I don't mean art as in "someone's artwork" as was previously argued by someone else in another thread. Marketing is NOT your fucking art. Save that for sticking on your refridgerator with magnets. Marketing a product or service successfully has NOTHING to do with someone thinking their design is a piece of art. It's either properly produced, just like a TV or radio spot, and it works, or it doesn't. End of story. Anything else about "but I'm an artist" is just ego feeding or excuses.

Pete 02-02-2002 08:00 PM

Heres my reply to the original post:

I remember starting out in this buisness over 2 years ago when I stumbled upon some softcore sites while making a "Joke" site. I liked what I seen and decided to get into porn sites just because I wanted to see how all the money was being made. I didnt have anyone show me how to make a site or how to trade traffic or where to trade traffic or the fact that trading traffic even existed. No one showed me a manual on webmastering or webmaster ethics. No one showed me how to make pop up windows and that if I posted a message in a BBS that everyone would laugh at me. No one showed me what programs make you money and what programs will fuck you. No one showed me that using illegal Playboy images would have APIC World wide after you:)

Its learning experience for everyone. There is no school we can go to to learn how to become an Adult webmaster. When ever we learn some new and effective we keep it to ourselves. Dont tell anyone because it might cut into our profits.

Unprofessionalism is as common as boneprone scratching his balls.

Hold on while I have a drink of beer....

In this buisness you have to pick up tips on your own and trial and error is key. No one will show you what it takes to make it in this buisness unless they profit from it.

Its a cruel buisness but I'm doing just fine...thanks!

teadrinker 02-02-2002 08:32 PM

AMP surely you must have other skillz then design if your ego is so high at this point, what other sites do you own? do you have 100 000 SE traffic? do you own a major paysite? surely owning a design company wont change the world.

Pornwolf 02-02-2002 08:55 PM

Teadrinker, I don't know if Amp has all that, but if you have 100,000 in SE traffic I'll give you this $1,203 Click Cash check just to find out your secret!

You have to cash it though.

A-MEN! My pop told me a similar thing. Only he used "Grave digger".

I agree w/ what most people say here. I got into this biz almost 2 years ago thinkin' I was gonna be a millionaire, but reality set in quickly, but the funny thing was that I really enjoy doing this! I have a regular day job, so I only have time to do this on nights & the weekends until one day when it finally takes off. So I don't make a killing @ this, but I enjoy it. It's a challenge to be constantly learning new things, running into the road blocks (although that can really blow @ times), learning how to manipulate traffic, rank in the SEs, learning new design techniques...and I could go on & on! Not to mention the eye candy!:winkwink: But I have the constant drive to keep progressing, learning & expanding...and I love every minute of it! And I know one day it will pay off in just more than being proud of what I learned & what actually worked out to my benefit.

I wish I could have read this thread earlier...

Going back to Amps original posts, excellent wisdom and advice, I just wish I didn't have to feel put down by his remarks against teenagers in the porn business (me being 19) BUT I know his statements are really in regards to lazy half-assers/cheaters who don't know anything about business and I just somehow got stereotyped in there. I realize how new I am to everything, but I'm trying to create a good foundation of knowledge and experience to build a legitimate business out of all this.

And Amp, all our designs are "Art Work" we're just prosituting the talent for $$$, I'd do it for free but then I would be everyone's slut :winkwink:

Well, like I said... I can show off my newly made site of the week to all my buddies and speak of it as my "artwork"... but that's just bullshit feeding an ego... a porn site tour is a marketing tool... just like a threefold 4 color brochure. It either sells, or it doesn't.

Art hangs in museums.
