A serious question about frozen bananas

Several times in the past few months I have mentioned that I like to make fruit smoothies as part of my new diet. Several times in the past few months when discussing said fruit smoothies people have suggested I include frozen bananas.

I will admit that I was always hesitant about doing so, as frozen fruit holds little appeal to a guy that has lived in CA all his life. Well, I happened to have an extra banana, and thought, "what the hell" and put it in the freezer for later inclusion in a smoothie. Tonight I decided to make one, and I pulled out my frozen banana.

My question is this: How the hell are you supposed to peel a frozen banana? Or are you supposed to peel it first? The second option does sound very appetizing, but peeling a frozen banana turned out to be rather difficult.

Well health nuts are usually pretty weird, eat your bananas how you want.

You don't have to freeze it. Smoothies taste just fine with room temperature bananas.

mm frozen bananas make great popsicles for summer!

Peel them before you freeze them. If you're worried about freezer burn, wax paper will do the trick.

I think the philosophy behind adding a frozen banana to a smoothie would be to add chill without watering it down with ice cubes.

I am sorry, but that is funny as hell. You should try to think a bit outside the boxy before freezing a banana

Yeah, I think freezing a banana was "out of the box" as is. I will stick with my old school, room temp bananas.

It's good for emergencies. Like when you run out of Pam and have to actually butter a muffin tray.

Banannas don't always chop up well in the blender. I would imagine a frozen bannana in the blender would leave you with frozen chunks.

living with a health nut for years, i know that he used to buy bananas take the peels off of all of them and freeze them in ziplock bags. actually he used to cut them in pieces. it also keeps the smoothie cold longer too.

I always add a frozen banana to my fruit smoothies. It makes the drink colder and a better texture, I've never liked adding ice because it gets watered down. I made the mistake of freezing them with the skin a couple times as well... not fun! Just peel them and wrap them before freezing.

The wax paper keeps the banana from turning brown or getting freezer burn. Don't freeze them for too long, though. I had a wonderful strawberry/banana smoothie a few weeks ago. They used cut-up frozen bananas....it was yummy!

A couple times? Now I don't feel so bad. Once was enough to convince me that isn't that way to go.

I am still undecided if I am going to try it peeled next time.

If you set the banana on the counter, the peel will thaw first.

You can peel a froze banana in this manner:

Cut it in half. Take each half and cut it in half again, this time down the length of the banana. Half each section again length wise. Cut down the peel side of the banana on the inside, the peel should fall off in one piece.

Another good way to cool down a smoothie without watering it down is to buy the single serving yogurt cups (I use the no fat variety) and freeze them. The plastic container peels easily off the frozen block of yogurt and you're good to go.
