All The Cogent Bashers Are All Wrong!!!!!!!

Back in 2001 when Cogent first starting offering 100 mbps for $3000/month many people came out and started bashing them saying they would be gone very soon. It's almost 2006 now and they are they main reason bandwidth prices have dropped so low. All the hosting people with no access to Cogent were bashing and some of them even quietly added them to their network. Cogent has become bigger and better over the years and they are still growing!!!!!!!!!! If not for Cogent people would still be paying $200-$400/mbps.

Cogent Communications Launches Special Pricing Program for Cable Companies

WASHINGTON, July 20 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Cogent Communications Group, Inc. (AMEX: COI - News), a multinational Tier 1 Internet service provider, announced today that it is making a unique offer to cable companies interested in testing Cogent's high quality Internet service without the risk of a long term commitment other providers require. Recently ranked as the largest Ethernet service provider in the United States, Cogent's new "Zero Commit" offer will help cable companies improve margins in their consumer broadband access businesses. Cogent's "Zero Commit" program allows the cable customer to cancel service within thirty (30) days of service initiation for any reason. The cable customer will pay only for the full first month of service charges but will be credited back any installation charges already paid.

"Thanks to Cogent's low cost structure and all-IP network architecture, you can have it both ways -- low cost and high quality. Current Cogent customers enjoy this today. They tell us overwhelmingly that our price, network performance, and customer service are the attributes they most value from Cogent," said Reed Harrison, President and Chief Operating Officer. "We want to make it as easy as we possibly can for new customers to have the opportunity to 'test drive' Cogent's price/performance."

"We see a huge opportunity in the consumer broadband market as bandwidth demands in the home explode over the next decade," said Dave Schaeffer, CEO of Cogent Communications. "Unlike many service providers, Cogent does not compete in the consumer market, but remains focused on the enterprise market and the core of the internet -- segments in which Cogent dominates as a price leader."

Cogent is eager to extend this offer based on a pattern of success this type of program has had in the past. Just 2 years ago, Cogent noticed a similar pattern of bandwidth growth among students and offered a comparable promotion to university customers. Today, Cogent serves over 400 of the top educational institutions in the country. Many of these are universities that initially tested the Cogent network with a small backup connection, then ultimately reconfigured their networks and increased bandwidth to make Cogent their primary provider based on the combination of outstanding quality and overall cost savings they could achieve.

Today, Cogent serves several large cable customers in North America and Europe and expects this number to grow rapidly as the cable companies realize they can have more high quality bandwidth at a better price than any other provider can offer today.

Cogent Communications Selects Hibernia Atlantic's Wavelength Service

BOSTON and WASHINGTON, July 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Hibernia Atlantic, the fastest trans-Atlantic transport provider, announces today that Cogent Communications Group, Inc. (Amex: COI - News), the largest Ethernet service provider in the US and a multinational Tier 1 ISP, has selected Hibernia's network to provide 10Gbps wavelength service from Boston to London to meet growing customer demand for trans-Atlantic capacity.
Hibernia Atlantic owns and operates the only direct trans-Atlantic cable route from the US and Canada to Ireland and the UK. This uniquely secure cable empowers customers to move their traffic between Europe and North America without touching London, New York or other potential points of failure.

Hibernia's US-built transport does not traverse traditional, congested oceanic routes, like the UK's Cornwall District or the NY and NJ waterways. Instead, Hibernia has deployed the latest, fastest cable connections with the ability to deliver next generation services.

"We are pleased to welcome Cogent to Hibernia's ever growing customer base," states Eric Gutshall, the VP of Sales & Marketing for Hibernia Atlantic,

"including our traditional base of customers; Wholesale Carriers, Ethernet Service providers, Broadcast clients and Enterprise customers. We offer Cogent a unique sense of security and route diversity for its customers."

"We are pleased to integrate Hibernia Atlantic as our third independent provider of trans-Atlantic connectivity," states Lee Livingston, VP of Provisioning & Carrier Services for Cogent Communications. "Cogent's utmost goal is to provide our customers with the most reliable, high performance transit and transport services available at the most competitive pricing in the market. Hibernia Atlantic helps contribute toward that goal along with providing true diversity for Cogent."

About Hibernia Atlantic:

The Hibernia Atlantic network provides European and US customers with direct Trans-Atlantic connectivity, at competitive prices, with unparalleled support and service. Hibernia Atlantic's redundant rings between Dublin, Manchester, London, New York, Halifax, Montreal and Boston are the fastest way to communicate across the Atlantic, providing dedicated Ethernet and optical level service up to GigE and 10G wavelengths. With Hibernia's cutting-edge, network technology, enterprise customers, carriers and wholesale customers will now be able to offer reliable, next-generation bundled services to their end-users at affordable prices. Hibernia Atlantic is a private company, established in 2001 by Columbia Ventures Corporation (CVC). For more information, please visit http://www.hiberniaatlantic.com.

They don't dare come, some very large hosting companies are using Cogent.

I've used Cogent before. I haven't had a problem. Whatever problems I may have enountered were mostly with the hosts I had not with Cogent. Now that I generate more traffic while using up much much less bandwidth, I've moved off Cogent. However, I'd definitely recommend them as cheap bulk quality bandwidth to people with TGPs/MGPs or other high bandwidth methods of traffic generation/filtering.

Yup, it's all the small resellers that jumped in on the cheap bandwidth bandwagon that over sell and give Cogent a bad name. Cogent is great for hosted gallerys

This is a completely logical step if you look at their goal - which is NOT to provide the best service at the best price:

I've been using a good bit of cogent pipe for quite some time and it's been just fine. Frankly, I always figured at least half the cogent bashers had specific agendas.....

Cogent is the Kia of bandwidth providers. It may provide transporation, but it's not going to win the Indy 500.

Nothing wrong with it as long as you understand the pluses and minuses. Not something I'd use personally, but I'm not budget limited. If I were, it might be more attractive.

Even Cogent reps will tell you that you NEED a top notch provider as well as Cogent. Especially for people who have traffic from overseas.

Of course, imo, that only makes sense...

Shit ill bash it...we offer it on a separate network and ill show you the different in trace and ping times...its horrendous compared to MCI Global Crossing Level 3 etc...but for cheap gallery hosting and things of that nature I would use it. I think your interpretation of "bashing" is simply people comparing them to better carriers. I think its good if your looking to save money on non critical projects IMHO =)

Yes but how many backbones were engineered from the beginning to be tapped? See link:

http://www.anomalies.net/news/cogent/

Many of the EU carriers are a little harder to tap ;)
