is this illegal or not?

if you have a website and then post articles from other websites on a daily basis is it illegal? Like if you provide a link to the site and give credit?

Go watch "Epic". LOL, I think "GOOGLEZON" plans on doing that in 2014.

Fuck the wannabe prophet shmucks who made that film. As far as the legalities, yeah, it's probably illegal to post copywritten material on your personal website.

Obviously it is, if no one gave you permission to re-distribute their work

It is absolutely positively a copyright violation, period, no ifs ands or buts.

but...it is accepted practice at least in this biz that if you link back to the source nobody cares.....because linking back has benefits.. I sometimes use things from Neal Boortz and he sometimes uses things from me...but I did ask his permission to do so and he asked mine.

but bottom line, yes it is illegal

I think it was just a school project about where they see the internet going in the next couple years ... well that's what I read at least

Yes it is LEGAL..

You are only allowed to take a small part (a paragraph or so) and you need to have it in quotes, then provide the source link.

Yahoo, Google, etc.. Do it all day long.

Probably the new wave of "blogs" adult webmasters keep spitting out. Before the idiot invasion people posted in their own words about someone elses post, entry, or article and then linked to it. Some people are just too lazy / stupid to write anything on their own accord.

I have a less obvious question. Say someone publishes an rss feed and you only use a portion of it, removing the crap you don't like (like, oh, say, a link back to their site). Where does that fall in the legal spectrum?

This is not something I plan to do, btw.
