I can't tell you how many, no talent, slack ass, dumbshit, young wannabe diretors/producers that say, "Citizen Cane was the best movie of the 20th century" I have met in this industry. And, (I agree with you) I bet, none of them have ever seen it. I admit it. I have never seen it, so I can't honestly say if it's the best film of the 20th century. Without having seen every film of the 20th century, I doubt anyone can say what was the best film. I know that I've tried to sit through it twice, and both times I fell asleep. I just know that when these idiots come to our shop they want to sound like they know film. I can tell that if they did see "Citizen Kane," it was in their film class, that they just barely graduated from. You can critique film all you want but it all comes down to the mighty dollar. I've worked in it long enough to know that it's every man for himself. You want to see what I consider the best film ever made? Go rent, "Swimming With Sharks" I have seen stuff like that happen. People being yelled at by producers, and the producers just walk away laughing. The biggest losers of all are the fuckin' Weinstein brothers. Their execs are basically personal secretaries. They have their fresh out of college execs (idiots) fetching coffee, and they give them "vice president" titles. It's all about money. Like those fuckers at "Mouse-wich" (Auschwich aka Disney Studios) Why do you think they release a movie like, "Monsters Inc.", then when the hype dies down, they re-release it with extra outtakes at the end. Wait, I'm getting carried away... All I'm saying is you spout off that these idiots have no idea what film is and they like shit films, and then you come in here saying what every film student here in LA is saying, "Citizen Kane was the best film of the 20th century". They say that during the first year after they saw it. They talk about it with all their friends and how they can make a better film, all the while they're writing a film about 4 college buddies, that come out to "Hollywood" to write a movie about 4 college buddies making it big in Hollywood. Losers. |

Yeah, a lot of people aren't fans of NBK...it's not realistic, etc. It must have just fit into something personal in my life at some specific time or something. For some reason, I thought it stood out when i saw it...just pushing techniques in a creative way. Most people probably see it as just annoying :)
|
I liked U-Turn more.
|
I haven't seen that yet. I tend to like old Oliver's stuff...so I'll probably enjoy it.

Here is my top 5 (recent movies)
1. Snatch 2. Fight Club 3. Memento 4. Oceans Eleven 5. The Score (runner ups: blade, american beauty, matrix) |
Ok. Now you've given your point on movies, what about actors and actresses? Why? I give you a list (again)
1. Jack Nicholson - Because he can play any crazy man, he's great. Cocoos nest, shining ahh... 2. Kevin Spacey - He's just so good. Calm. 3. Bruce Willis - He allways has the 'hangover' look with 2 days old stubble. Can't beat it. He looks exactly how I feel. 4. Jim Carrey - Rubberfaced man, excellent. He makes movies you want to look at when you're bored. :) Mike Myers is the same. 5. Sean Connery - Love the accent :) I have a deja vu. Did this topic already exist somewhere?:pimp |
Fight Club was a great movie.
My favorites include: Fight Club Good Fellas Casino Pulp Fiction Driven Fast and the Furious Army of Darkness Meet the Parents The Boiler Room Starship Troopers Great male actors: Edward Norton Kevin Spacey Sean Conery Samuel L. Jackson John Cusack Jackie Chan - haha! Just kidding on that one! Great female actors (or actresses): Catherine Zeta-Jones Mira Sorvino Sandra Bullock Cheyenne Silver By the way, I just saw "Kung Pow: Enter the Fist" It was funny at first, but in the middle I was thinking "God! When will this end!" because it started to suck. Even though I had mixed feelings on this film it has had an impact on my life because I can't stop quoting it "Ooooweeeeeewoooooweeeeeeewooooooo"! |
Recent Movies:
1. The Matrix 2. Fight Club 3. Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon All time: 1. The Godfather 2. The Matrix 3. Fight Club 4. Pulp Fiction 5. Let it Ride 6. A League of Their Own 7. Shawshank Redemption 8. Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon 9. People vs. Larry Flynt 10. Better of Dead As far as everyone elses taste. I thought The Game was average. Vanilla Sky was better. I loved Snatch it didn't top Fight Club. Fight Club was about deep and twisted shit. It made you think. Snatch was about what everything else is about: crime and violence. I cant believe Hackers, Cruel Intentions, Gattica and Mr. Ripley was mentioned here. Especially Hackers. That was the worst fucking movie. |

Fight Club is tha best movie ever along with lord of the rings... =)
:BangBang: |
Yes, Redshoe, you are getting carried away. :)
The problem is that you work in the field and you have to take the abuse, put up with the show and suffer the fools for your livelihood. I have friends in the biz (including an animation teacher at the mouse company) and have had to listen to them vent. But I do think Citizen Kane is right up there as one of the best films ever made. Based on William Randolph Hearst and controversial in its day. I own Citizen Kane in several versions, including the 50th anniversay edition, don't know how many times I've seen it. But I'm an Orson Welles fan and even watched It's All True when I had the chance. I think one of the best movies ever made was another Welles classic (panned in its day), Touch of Evil. Still, it's not a widely popular genre so it may never get the respect it deserves. A tremendous amount of notable films were made pre-1950. Distinguishing the truly great works from the films that first introduced a technology, method or style is a very difficult task and the best we can do is offer our opinions. In my opinion, more people should see Visions of Light to better understand the art of cinematography. It's a good place to start for the casual movie lover and unfortunately too many film students have not seen it. |
well, we all know that the best movie of all times is Star Wars, right ?
|
Sorry Redshoe if you misunderstood my post, or maybe you did understand and it?s easier too label me as a film school wannabe so you don?t have to take into account my point of view. But realize I could just as easily label you as some film maker wannabe who has probably little experience in the field other then 3rd Gaphers Assistant on the set of Clueless. But I won?t.
There is little denying that Citizen Kane changed the face of cinema. I would much rather sit down and watch a film like Fight Club but I also realize that David Fincher, Steven Spielberg, and Sam Mendes would not be making movies like Fight Club, Schindler's List, and American Beauty had Orson Wells not made Citizen Kane when he did. That?s why I think it was the movie of the century. Purely because of the impact it had and the impact it will forever have on film. But on another note, since there do seem to be some film lovers here, has anyone seen a movie called Wonder Boys? It came out recently and I thought it was great but have never heard anyone else say anything about it. It stared Michael Douglas, Katie Holmes, Tobey Maguire, Francis McDormond, Robert Downey Jr., and a few others I can't recall at the time. Anyway if you haven?t seen it I would suggest renting it, if you have what were your thoughts on it? |
wonder boys was good.. i personally wouldn't rave about it, but it was good.. tobey maguire and michael douglas are a somewhat strange pairing but it really works.. tobey's getting some choice roles at the moment..

Let's not forget another man who has had a rather large impact on Hollywood but has not been mentioned here. The king of the b movie, Roger Corman. This is the man who brought us Jack Nicholson, Robert Deniro, Francis Ford Coppola, Martin Scorsese, Robert Towne Bruce Dern, Peter Bogdanovich, Jonathan Demme, Ron Howard, John Sayles, Gale Anne Hurd and James Cameron the list goes on. These people might have made it in the biz but it was Corman who gave them their career starts and set them on their way. The guy was a fucking genius. Who else would go and buy a japanese film dub it in english shoot some scenes with Raymond Burr in an office talking into a microphone and edit that in release it in the United States and create a pop culture icon....that was fucking GODZILLA...and let's not forget Night Of The Living Dead. Sure Welles probably inspired even Corman to be an independent film maker but who inspired Welles' independence? Possibly such people as Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks, and Charlie Chaplin who had the balls to form their own studio United Artists in order to have creative control over their own films. I would just like to add another film to the list here which I believe is really inspirational. The movie is about a guy who is a complete fuck up but had the balls to not only have a vision but to actively pursue the succes of that vision. The movie...ED WOOD. eros :) |
any film by John Waters
:thumbsup |
Ed D. Wood Jr. is my hero.
Wood did what he loved any way he could. He may have died a penniless drunk but he was more of a success than he could have ever imagined. There a so many great directors that I cannot list them all. This site lists them better than I could. Though I think most of our current directors wouldn't be in the biz if they weren't inspired by the likes of Cecil B. Demille and Frank Cappra. |
I am Jack's Winter of discontent....
Fight Club rocks -- one of the few movies that actually may exceed the book (y'all did read the book, right?) Snatch was OK, but it was Mr. Madonna's sophomore slump IMHO -- Lock Stock kicked so much more ass. My faves (no particular order): Casablanca Citizen Kane (yes I've seen it, and own it) When Harry Met Sally American Beauty Pulp Fiction Fletch Out of Sight Fight Club Caddyshack If you are wondering how I can put Casablanca and Caddyshack on the same list, then you just don't understand.... :thumbsup |
Oh yeah... and Magnolia. One of those movies that truly half of the people hate, and the other half love....
|
Anyone into old kung-fu movies?
The original drunken master! With the young jackie chan and that old fart Samseed! that movie is the stuff... |

anybody mention Office Space?
umm, yea.... |
Quote:
It's another one of those movies I rank with Ed Wood quite strangely enough. Like Ed Wood was about a guy achieving his dreams, Office Space was about putting it all into perspective...what is actually important. And I love the soundtrack funny as shit watching white collar workers dancing to gangster rap. The gangster jump in scene with the printer is fucking hilarious. I would have to say Office Space is an all time guilty pleasure...if it is on I'm watching it :) eros |
ever seen taxi driver?
good movie that was the movie that John Hinkley saw Jodi Foster in, fell in love with her, and tried to assassinate Reagan for her. |
