Good call...

Instead of investing in more lenses... you might want to find a good lighting alternative... if you're into that ...

If you want cheap realiable stobes... www.alienbees.com has some good setups for CHEAP...

Then again I don't know if you're really lookin for all that jazz...

Cool, I'll have to look into it then. Thanks for the info!

and buying a bunch of new harddrives

yeah, RAW would be nice - but we use that just for Danni Ashe shoots cause they require that. i think it also depends a bit on the amount you shoot and how much time and effort you want or have to invest after the shooting

I really want that fish eye lens. I heard the Nikon software can actually flatten it out to normal perception for a 180 shot!

What makes Raw better? What options do you gain?

RAW is simply just the data your chip sees - the jpegs you get are already color/brightness/contrast processed and sharpened internally in the camera. RAW files look ugly at the beginning, but you can do all those adjustments when importing them into photoshop for example. that means: no fucked up pics because of a failed white balance for example - much more easily to correct

I want to get a ring flash...Get that Helmut Newton effect. Most of the ones that run on batteries are too small tho.

I'd be interested in books or websites that would help me learn this stuff.

As tASSy said, we just got the Rebel XT with the 28-135mm zoom and and I need to learn wtf I'm doing.

Both very readable and Hal they make one for the xt also but the most important book you will read will be the book on exposure.

I had bought the DX 10.5mm Fisheye. It was TOO much for my standards... and I used Nikon Capture to make it wide angle, but what they fail to tell you is, granted it'll take the bend distortion out, the outer most areas of the image are distorted from the bend...

So what's the point?

I'll just throw down for the 16mm Fisheye... Still fuckin expensive...

Books work wonders if you have focus. Hal and Jake, you can find $5 books on Amazon.

Best thing to do is take your camera and your book to to starbucks and just sit there for the day. Read something, try it out on your camera, then read something else. The good books will explain what to do and why you would do it in certain situations.

The automatic side of these cameras is great, but you should just learn the manual setting. Your photographs will look a million times better if you do.

I shoot only in Manual. Here are some examples of pictures that would be difficult, and in some cases impossible, to get in the Auto setting:

I am by no stretch a great photographer, but I am a good study and love to practice.

I used that rule on hime running, as you can see I changed the focus hotspot.

I centered him on the other one because time is not on my side haha...that pup runs at me when I aim the camera at him

nice shots. we use caonon eos 1Ds and a canon Rebel.

like the Rebel a lot better for its ease of use.

will probably sell the EOS 1Ds for a very good price. If any one is interested, hit me on icq 198 036 437.

It's nearly brand new and we have the entire Canon Speedlight flash system and large Sigma lens that could go with it also.

hey jake - you will love the canon 20 D - I recently changed to it from nikon - it has a lot of features missing in the comparable nikon price range - burst mode and low light 1600 ASA are the top two - you have the only lens you will ever need to own and thats the 2.8? 24-70 - everything else is nice but it's the only lens I usually need unless doing a special shot.

the 50mm is a prime - it is great for portraits and such - but the problem is that in low light your depth of field is very short - so everything will be out of focus in the background - you would be very frustrated using it for sex stills - but I do use it for very lowlight set ups since I shoot ambient light a lot (non-strobe) - it is a fast lens with 1.4? - that means more light can go through the glass = faster.

the wide angle 17-40mm 4.0? you have is nice but not as fast as the 2.8? 24-70mm - so - instead of using that lens just back up a little with the 24-70 - you will understand when you have shot a few times with it - but - if you need the wide shot up close use that 17-40mm lens - make sure your dont get the wrap around effect in the corners of your frame from it shooting too close - usually bad for porn shots.

nothing will teach you these things more than trial and error experimentation - luckily for you - you have a ready to go model at all times to play around with Allie - have fun and read the owners manual to the 20D - there are a lot of features in there that are a little overwhelming - SLRs have too much sometimes - try to orientate yourself before jumping in unprepared.

I'll take a free trial for the advice - hehe - just kidding - (i tried)
