RAW is simply just the data your chip sees - the jpegs you get are already color/brightness/contrast processed and sharpened internally in the camera. RAW files look ugly at the beginning, but you can do all those adjustments when importing them into photoshop for example. that means: no fucked up pics because of a failed white balance for example - much more easily to correct
