Check out Jeff Beck's "Blow By Blow". The song "Diamond Dust" is incredible. I saw a show with Jeff Beck opening for John McLaughlin and the Mahavishnu Orchestra (who was touring in support of their "Visions of the Emerald Beyond" album), and it was pure guitar magic - especially when both Beck and McLaughlin were on stage at the end jamming.

Sorry guys there are alot of good guitarist out there but there are very few that can play on the level of Stevie Ray Vaughn, that mans guitar playing brings tears to my eyes.

But dont forget the old old school, BB King is a True Guitar God and then New(er) School, Gotta give props to Kenny Wayne Shepard ive seen him and few times and he is amazing.

Hahaha Adrian Belew. He needed the money OH!

There are certain style/tones that I can just instantly spot who is playing. Eddie, Angus, Chuck Berry, Jerry, and Thorogood come to mind.

My favourite few guitarists of the 'hard rock' hair band era:

1) Rik Emmett (Triumph)
2) Steve Vai (for his David Lee Roth and early solo stuff)
3) Larry Mitchell (ya had to see this guy to believe him - nuts)
4) Yngwie Malmsteen (played exactly the same way on every song, but man was it impressive)
5) Marty Friedman (solely for his stuff with Jason Becker and Cacophony, in Megadeth he gained technique and restraint)
6) Richie Blackmore, the father of shred rhythm and leads
that's a nice list

say what you will. he's still damn good. Unlike what many people say, he is not arrogant. Sure, he knows he's good but he never claimed to be the greatest.

Well I guess we can tell who drank the kool aid at the dead show now can't we?

Where shall I start.

Let me preface this by saying this is in direct response to your question, and not a matter of my personal taste or favorites

Hmmm.

Edge-U2
EVH- The Brown Sound is very distinct
Tim Reynolds
Santana
Stanley Jordan
David Gilmour

and countless others. In fact most of the people listed above could play ANYTHING written by anyone else and you could still tell who was playing.
