Some Fuckstick Stole My Laptop

Some piece of shit broke into my car while it was parked at a friend's house and lifted my laptop and carrying case (which had a couple 250gb firewire drives adn a 750mb zip drive). The worst part is, I had alot of personal stuff on there that I can not get back. And alot of web designs that were works in progress that are now gone forever. I have a backup machine but it's about a year older and is alot slower still a G4 but only 867MHz or something. And a measily 256MB of ram. The other machine had 2 gigs. Man I am depressed. The thing I don't get, there were no signs of forcable entry and I ALWAYS lock my doors.

I have an alarm on one of my cars that was hit. I was told that there's some soft of electronic device that these people have to render alarms useless.

Not sure how much truth there is to this, but a few of my friends have been hit in recent weeks and all have alarm systems.

The more I think about it, I had to have somehow left the car unlocked... But that seriously NEVER happens. I always lock my doors, even if I am running in the house for 2 minutes, it's just a habit I have.

LOL, keep the laptop, just let me FW dump everything off it first. It's not the money, I just hate the violated feeling you get when someone rips your shit.

Somewhere in Detroit sits a man, a 50 piece lighter, with a big smile and a new laptop.

You should have had tracking software installed. Each time the computer connects to the internet, the IP is logged. You can either have the IP sent to an email address or there are services that handle it. Then it would be just a matter of waiting for someone to sign onto the net, assuming they don't reformat first.

I was thinking that too. Only problem is, they don't know my password to login, so they will have to reformat as their is no guest account on the system. I have several programs run at login time that hit servers on the web that do log ips. But they won't be running any of them without my password :/

That sucks then.

I wonder if there is something you could do to get around a reformat?

Like a permanently hidden partition and then somehow start the program at boot. I don't know anything about that though.

They should really have such tracking features built right into random pieces of hardware.

My Cherokee had the window smashed and face ripped off the stereo in Vancouver a couple weeks ago. Totally useless score for the crackhead who did it.

Absolute.com is one of the more professional services. Their Computrace Personal is $50 a year.

http://www.secure-it.com/products/asset_recovery.htm

http://www.synet.biz/nTracker/index.htm uses your email and I don't think requires a subscription.

There's quite a few different ones. I had a freeware one, but I can't find it now.

cops got such a device
scans all the codes until the device gets rifght one and deactivates your alarm

used mostly when alarms go off and don't stop

would see it often when used to work at airport and friends that worked as RCMP would show me. Airplanes takeing off makes lorts of noise and the vibrations would set off car alarms all the time

damn sorry to hear it I had about 10k worth of stereo and photo equipment stolen out of my car a few years back and fucking insurance didn't pay me shit. They actually tried to pin insurance fraud on me and took me down to their office and interrogated me like a criminal. Fucking Progressive. Someone bypassed the Viper alarm and keyless entry and just opened the door and took the shit. Fucking cops did nothing. Didn't come out or anything.
