Some Fuckstick Stole My Laptop

Some piece of shit broke into my car while it was parked at a friend's house and lifted my laptop and carrying case (which had a couple 250gb firewire drives adn a 750mb zip drive). The worst part is, I had alot of personal stuff on there that I can not get back. And alot of web designs that were works in progress that are now gone forever. I have a backup machine but it's about a year older and is alot slower still a G4 but only 867MHz or something. And a measily 256MB of ram. The other machine had 2 gigs. Man I am depressed. The thing I don't get, there were no signs of forcable entry and I ALWAYS lock my doors.

candyflip 07-10-2005 07:50 PM

I have an alarm on one of my cars that was hit. I was told that there's some soft of electronic device that these people have to render alarms useless.

Not sure how much truth there is to this, but a few of my friends have been hit in recent weeks and all have alarm systems.

StickyGreen 07-10-2005 07:51 PM

someone stole my laptop my first year of college cuz i would hide all the ecstasy i sold in the battery compartment along with the cash. it must have been someone i knew. that is a pretty good hiding spot though huh? it would just be better if no one knew about it lol...

Spunky 07-10-2005 07:51 PM

That fucking sucks..but never leave valuables inside your car..shit they will break in if they see 25 cents on your dash

bret 07-10-2005 07:52 PM

The more I think about it, I had to have somehow left the car unlocked... But that seriously NEVER happens. I always lock my doors, even if I am running in the house for 2 minutes, it's just a habit I have.

Donny 07-10-2005 07:53 PM

I had an extra set of keys. It was easy. Thanks for the new mac. Oh, these designs aren't my thing.

bret 07-10-2005 08:00 PM

LOL, keep the laptop, just let me FW dump everything off it first. It's not the money, I just hate the violated feeling you get when someone rips your shit.

Hardlinks 07-10-2005 08:03 PM

Somewhere in Detroit sits a man, a 50 piece lighter, with a big smile and a new laptop.

You should have had tracking software installed. Each time the computer connects to the internet, the IP is logged. You can either have the IP sent to an email address or there are services that handle it. Then it would be just a matter of waiting for someone to sign onto the net, assuming they don't reformat first.

no shit. i am already running through the usual channels to see if anyone has one they recently "aquired". i think it was a friend of a friend. they left 2 checkbooks, 2 pairs of jeans and a nice shirt that was all sitting next to the bag in the back. the only thing they took was the laptop, the one thing i actually cared about in the truck.

I was thinking that too. Only problem is, they don't know my password to login, so they will have to reformat as their is no guest account on the system. I have several programs run at login time that hit servers on the web that do log ips. But they won't be running any of them without my password :/

That sucks then.

I wonder if there is something you could do to get around a reformat?

Like a permanently hidden partition and then somehow start the program at boot. I don't know anything about that though.

They should really have such tracking features built right into random pieces of hardware.

CybermedAndy 07-10-2005 11:37 PM

My Cherokee had the window smashed and face ripped off the stereo in Vancouver a couple weeks ago. Totally useless score for the crackhead who did it.

Don't sweat it, karma will even things out ;)

PixeLs 07-11-2005 01:57 AM

You still the world inhabited by honest and God-fearing people dude?

Matt 26z 07-11-2005 02:18 AM

Absolute.com is one of the more professional services. Their Computrace Personal is $50 a year.

http://www.secure-it.com/products/asset_recovery.htm

http://www.synet.biz/nTracker/index.htm uses your email and I don't think requires a subscription.

There's quite a few different ones. I had a freeware one, but I can't find it now.

cops got such a device
scans all the codes until the device gets rifght one and deactivates your alarm

used mostly when alarms go off and don't stop

would see it often when used to work at airport and friends that worked as RCMP would show me. Airplanes takeing off makes lorts of noise and the vibrations would set off car alarms all the time

Steve 07-11-2005 07:44 AM

locks are only an obstacle to honest people - very strange that your other valuables weren't grabbed

how did you know they only took the laptop?

Mr. Mojo Risin 07-11-2005 07:53 AM

damn sorry to hear it :( I had about 10k worth of stereo and photo equipment stolen out of my car a few years back and fucking insurance didn't pay me shit. They actually tried to pin insurance fraud on me and took me down to their office and interrogated me like a criminal. Fucking Progressive. Someone bypassed the Viper alarm and keyless entry and just opened the door and took the shit. Fucking cops did nothing. Didn't come out or anything.
