I just moved in a house where dsl or cable isn't available and I've been on a 56k modem now for a week. I'm just about to go crazy. I'm currently looking for a new house.
Seriously, I'll get a satellite connection next week. Thanks god!

I moved to a new house last November and was stuck on 128 ISDN for a few months, it was a very pleasant experience ;)

I was at home until about 6 months ago when I got fed up and built a 100' tower to access the high speed at my office 10 miles away.
I hated dialup soooo bad. Surfing GFY was really bad on dialup.

Believe it or not, I am still on a dial up. I have no choice for where I live.
We are VERY rural, adirondack mountians..... We have a local phone Co EG no dsl Cable stops a few miles away, Purchased a satelite connection but that was worse than dial up.

Best of all if you download a couple hundred megs they slow you to sub-dialup speed for 24 hours. I'm moving shortly to an area with no broadband yet. Since WIldblue is supposed to go live in September (Wildblue=new satellite technology that should probably work) I've opted to install 2 dialups until then, yuck. The only other option is commercial satellite service, it works, buts its around $500 a month for a 256K up/down unlimited service. And the dish costs 5 grand. I may have to go that way if wild blue doesn't deliver.

I know a certain someone very successful and reputable (arguably the best in his field) who posts here on gfy.
He pays over 500 a month for his dial up service. Its all about where you live. But the fact he accomlished what he did on dial up is testament to his dedication and patience, not to mention talent. |

wow, didnt know satellite sucked so badly. i use a 14.4 modem, powered by two white dancing mice.(you know those dance pads(plastic rug, if you will) you put on the floor, hook up to your playstation and dance to dance games? i fabricated a 2x2 version for them, hooked the cables up to my modem and as they dance they generate electricity), cuz...REMEMBER? WE DON'T HAVE ELECTRICITY HERE IN EUROPE...

I have been looking at this for months. Google around once in a while you find a satisfied satellite user, but its the exception. They are so oversold that the service is bad, most of the time, from the reviews I am reading, and the FAP (fair access policy) reduces you to 28K if you actually get lucky and download 100 megs or 2.Wildblue might suffer the same fate, if it works at all. They claim to have multiple beams and a second satellite ready to launch, but you still are putting 10's of thousands of customers down a single pipe, we'll have to wait and see. The technology is so much more advanced than directway or starband that both should go out of business within a short period, should wild blue be sucessful. I'm going to wait a few months, and if wildblue does not deliver, go with a commercial service like vsat systems - $499 a month for 512/256 connection and about 5K install. Pricey, but thats currently the only option.

I haven't actually used dialup for a long time. With the stuff we do now, we would just be uploading new files 24/7
