This is just a sample of the utter shit that's playing nearby.

The Honeymooners
Bewitched
Mr. & Mrs. Smith
Herbie: Fully Loaded
Madagascar
The Longest Yard
The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl in 3-D
Monster-in-Law
The Perfect Man

Improve the theater experience. Or, put Pay Per View in every home and fuck the theaters that won't reinvest, expand, repair, etc. No one wants to sit next to stank jaba the hut two feet from the screen with your shoes sticking to the floor and one corner of the chair bent. DVD sales are setting records. Take a hint.

Too expensive to go to a theatre. You pay $50 for the ticket food and drinks for one person.

You're paying more today for movies than in the past and the movies are worse now than in the past.

I'll pick it up on DVD and watch it in the comfort of my home thank you. Movies today aren't worth anything more.

Maybe if you are a fat fuck who needs pizza, hot dogs, popcorn, large soda to enjoy a movie.

Other wise its $9 to get in and maybe $4 for a soda with refills.

I'd have to agree it's the theatre experience more than the price, although I've never spent $50 on just me. I however, do not like paying for the experience to get annoyed. People and cell phone, screaming children, people talking, loud mouth assholes screaming through the whole thing.

Summer movies are always going to cater to kids (same with Christmas movies).

DVD sales/rentals aren't hurting so it's obviously not the quality of the movies that's in question. IMHO, DVD (VHS/HBO/etc) is what's really hurting the movie industry. Who wants to pay $10+ over priced food and drink when most of us have big TV's we can watch the same movies on in the privacy of our homes?

Agree on everything. I don't go to movies very much anymore, because some asshat always brings his fucking screaming kids into an adult PG-13 show simply because babysitters are making $10 an hour now and he can't afford it. That or you get the obligatory punk-teenager confrontation when you say "you want to stop kicking my seat guy?" only to have him and his four other 130lb friends then escalate it to the point where you have to go to jail for beating them down, or change seats.

It just sucks, lol.

Plus home theaters are getting so good now that the sound from my home system (I'm an HT geek) is far superior to most of the state-of-the-art theaters that have been built within the last few years, much to my neighbor's chagrin. Why should I pay $10 to get a lower-quality experience?

And it doesn't help that soild movies of late like say "Crash" failed, while the mediocre/generic comedy The Longest Yard will easily hit $200M. It does make me hopeful though when I see a movie like Batman Begins do well, we need more action films of that sort, and LESS like "National Treasure" or "Sahara" or the countless other cookie cutter films that were released this year.

they are making the movies longer, and they want to make us believe that by doing that we are getting more movie for our money.
In reality we are getting more shit for our money.
There's a lot of crappy movies out there nowadays. I don't know what Hollywood is thinking!

Crash was a huge success. Already grossed $60 Mil and only cost $8 Mil to produce. Hollywood will always cater to 16 - 25 year old men. Thats who goes to the movies multiple times a month. Adults have more things to do, kids to raise, jobs to keep etc so they go to less movies so Hollywodd makes less for them and when they do, they promote it less. As someone said earlier, its not the quality of the movie that is the problem, (people are still renting and buying DVD's) its the improved technology that allows you to gte the theater experience at home. Now the only thing they have going for them to get people to see the movie in the theater is the early release date.

On a related note, you could change the words Hollywod to "The Adult Internet Industry" and movies to "sites" in the title of this thread and its completely true.

You are correct, good post.

The $8M cost on Crash was incorrect however, it doesn't include any of the marketing cost the studio endures to promote the film (television ads, radio spots, print ads, billboards, etc). Still, even if you triple the cost to say a more realistic $25M, it still nearly passed the golden rule, which is that a film needs to gross "three times its cost in dollars in order to turn a profit". That puts Crash at needing around $75M to put it at that mark.

Also, DVD sales aren't factored into those figures, studios don't like to talk about the massive profits they're realizing from the disc sales, so it's likely good to go.

Regardless, the truth is that movies are an art form, and it's taking more and more "TGP" type movies (garbage) to find those "SEO" levels of quality (Crash) lol.

Adult Video makers are actually making better movies these days than the ones comming out of "Mainstream" Hollywood.

Sad but true.

read something along these lines...

maybe it's the shit that's out and people are sick of seeing crap. Come out with something worth seeing at the movies and you will see better numbers.

I think the price of home theatres coming down, it doesnt pay to go to the movies. For the price for my wife and i to go to a movie i can buy it when it comes out on dvd and its mine forever.also i live in atlanta and for some reason black people feel the need to talk in the movies

i love movies and i love going to the theater but i go less and less now because it seems to be getting so rediculously expensive that i just feel like i am being raped. tickets for me and my wife, popcorn, a coke and a bottle of water is about 30.00. its not that i object to paying 30.00 - i object to feeling like i am getting fucked.

movies are total shit this year. it seems to get worse every year.

There are still good movies but so much more trash. It all comes down to if you're willing to risk spending at least $20 and 2 hours of your time on something that's likely going to be garbage.

Theaters have tried to create a better experience. Better seats, mega sized theatres, better sound, basically making the theatre a entertainment center. But that's not enough if the movies aren't any good with the added problem of inconsiderate viewers who will talk during the picture.

It's much more cost effective and many times a better experience to buy the dvd, have it forever, and be able to watch it without interruptions. The fact that people are more likely to buy dvds and people buy a lot of dvds, the movie industry is still making their money.

Could not agree more. We need more movies like:

Memento
Sin City
Kill Bill
Mystic River
Sideways
Closer

Only problem being that the vast majority of North American movie going public doesn't want to be challenged even a little by movies- they want mindless crap. Thats why movies like Little Nicky and Monster-in-law make millions.

Every movie on your list is a good one. Even Kill Bill, which is more comic book fodder than Sin City was lol, is a good movie.

The director of Momento helmed Batman Begins by the way, Chris Nolan. And that's why that movie is so sharp compared to the circus farce the previous three were...
