Depeche Mode!

Some days good things happen. I didn't even know they had annoucned a tour. I randomly logged into ticketmaster UK and see tickets went on sale this morning. It isn't until next april - lol - but I am seeing Depeche Mode. I go to a lot of concerts but this is one that has been on my 'must see before I die' list.

I sure hope so.. I wasn't sure if they would do much of the Vince era stuff live these days or not.

I saw them play in Toronto back in '87 or '88. It was a good concert at the time but they're not my cup o' tea anymore.

I'm usually pretty guitar oriented, however, Depeche Mode is one of my favorite bands. I feel that Martin Gore is one of the best songwriters of our time, both musically and lyrically.

Depeche Mode is absolutely awesome in concert. Just as with their albums, they pay close attention to all of the details - the sound and lights are excellent.

Fans of Depeche Mode must be among the most devoted fans I know of. I've seen DM play several times, but the last few times, it was as if the entire audience was singing along.

My favorite DM show was at the San Jose Arena, with opening act The The (not a typo, the band is called The The).

Every DM song blended seemlessly, and the music was ethereal. I think that was around 2001 - here is the set list:

Question of Time
World In My Eyes
Policy of Truth
It's No Good
Never Let Me Down
Walking In My Shoes
Only When I Lose Myself
Question of Lust
Home
Condemnation
In Your Room
Useless
Enjoy the Silence
Personal Jesus
Barrel of a Gun

Encore:

Somebody
Stripped
I Feel You
Just Can't Get Enough

Another memorable DM show occured in the late 90's, I was able to get primo advance tickets (20th row, center) to a show in Sacramento (about a two hour drive each way from my home in the Bay Area).

It was right after Ultra was released and the first tour after Dave Gahan's attempted suicide. It was both sad and joyous to watch and hear. All of the lyrics took on a special meaning.

Thanks to you Sarah, I just looked at the DM web site and I see they will be playing San Francisco in late 2005, so I will definitely make a point of seeing them again. I'll post a review and set list.

When I'm with you baby
I go out of my head
And I just can't get enough
And I just can't get enough
All the things you do to me
And everything you said

I just can't get enough
I just can't get enough

We slip and slide as we fall in love
And I just can't seem to get enough of

We walk together
We're walking down the street
And I just can't get enough
And I just can't get enough
Every time I think of you
I know we have to meet
And I just can't get enough
I just can't get enough

It's getting hotter
It's a burning love
And I just can't seem to get enough of

And when it rains
You're shining down for me
And I just can't get enough
And I just can't get enough
Just like a rainbow
You know you set me free
And I just can't get enough
And I just can't get enough

You're like an angel
And you give me your love
And I just can't seem to get enough of ...

I wouldn't be suprised to learn that Martin Gore composes many of his songs on a guitar first.

One feature at many DM shows is that Martin Gore often does a few solo songs on guitar.

Many of the ballad songs sound good on guitar too.

I remember once while DM was in San Francisco promoting for their concert, they visited the Live 105 (105.3 FM) studio, and Dave and Martin performed some acoustic songs live in the studio. I wish I could have taped that.

Cool stuff.

Great link...

My favorite DM song, although it is hard to really pick a favorite:

I'm taking a ride
With my best friend
I hope he never lets me down again
He knows where he's taking me
Taking me where I want to be
I'm taking a ride
With my best friend

We're flying high
We're watching the world pass us by
Never want to come down
Never want to put my feet back down
On the ground

I'm taking a ride
With my best friend
I hope he never lets me down again
Promises me I'm safe as houses
As long as I remember who's wearing the trousers
I hope he never lets me down again

Never let me down

See the stars, they're shining bright
Everything's alright tonight

----

It's a full moon tonight and indeed the star are shining bright.

Before Bill Graham's tragic death in a helicopter crash, he created one of the best concert venues in the country here in the Bay Area, which is named Shoreline Pavillion.

They used to offer season passes for blocks of shows of various genres at Shoreline. One year there was a band named Erasure on my season pass. Although I was a big fan of Depeche Mode, I really hadn't listened much to Erasure, other than hearing the song, "Oh, L'amour" on the radio.

They blew my mind...Andy Bell was carried out by several vamping campy guys in angel like costumes. From there on, the audience danced the night away. It was totally crazy fun.

Musically, I prefer Depeche Mode, but the Erasure concert was one wild night that I will never forget.

<<<< Die hard DM fan

My fave song:

I?m going to take my time
I have all the time in the world
To make you mine
It is written in the stars above
The gods decree
You?ll be right here by my side
Right next to me
You can run but you cannot hide

Don?t say you want me
Don?t say you need me
Don?t say you love me
It?s understood
Don?t say you?re happy
Out there without me
I know you can?t be
?cause it?s no good

I?ll be fine
I?ll be waiting patiently
Till you see the signs
And come running to my open arms
When will you realize
Do we have to wait till our worlds collide
Open up your eyes
You can?t turn back the tide

Don?t say you want me
Don?t say you need me
Don?t say you love me
It?s understood
Don?t say you?re happy
Out there without me
I know you can?t be
?cause it?s no good

I?m going to take my time
I have all the time in the world
To make you mine
It is written in the stars above

Don?t say you want me
Don?t say you need me
Don?t say you love me
It?s understood
Don?t say you?re happy
Out there without me
I know you can?t be
?cause it?s no good

Depeche Mode rules...ahhh High School memories with Richard Blade, the Poorman, and Depeche Mode seemingly always in studio at KROQ...

I happened to catch Duran Duran in HD at Wembley Statdium today, another trip in the way-back machine...
