I'm usually pretty guitar oriented, however, Depeche Mode is one of my favorite bands. I feel that Martin Gore is one of the best songwriters of our time, both musically and lyrically.

Depeche Mode is absolutely awesome in concert. Just as with their albums, they pay close attention to all of the details - the sound and lights are excellent.

Fans of Depeche Mode must be among the most devoted fans I know of. I've seen DM play several times, but the last few times, it was as if the entire audience was singing along.

My favorite DM show was at the San Jose Arena, with opening act The The (not a typo, the band is called The The).

Every DM song blended seemlessly, and the music was ethereal. I think that was around 2001 - here is the set list:

Question of Time
World In My Eyes
Policy of Truth
It's No Good
Never Let Me Down
Walking In My Shoes
Only When I Lose Myself
Question of Lust
Home
Condemnation
In Your Room
Useless
Enjoy the Silence
Personal Jesus
Barrel of a Gun

Encore:

Somebody
Stripped
I Feel You
Just Can't Get Enough

Another memorable DM show occured in the late 90's, I was able to get primo advance tickets (20th row, center) to a show in Sacramento (about a two hour drive each way from my home in the Bay Area).

It was right after Ultra was released and the first tour after Dave Gahan's attempted suicide. It was both sad and joyous to watch and hear. All of the lyrics took on a special meaning.

Thanks to you Sarah, I just looked at the DM web site and I see they will be playing San Francisco in late 2005, so I will definitely make a point of seeing them again. I'll post a review and set list.
