Need techie help: Computer drops frames during firewire capture- HELP!

Xeon system 2gigs ram, 750gig RAID 5

While trying to capture video via firewire... it chokes and drops frames and stops.

I have tried....

disabling the virus software
using different firewire ports (one 1394 on front, one on back)
using different 1394 cables
using an external hard-drive to capture onto

everything looks fine in system device manager

ANY IDEAS GFY??????

Make sure you have all unneccesary services stopped. It is good to have a secondary user profile that will start up with only the most base of services running.

This is a Dual Xeon 3.4mhz system.... should be no need to reduce services... but---- I did check that... that is not it.

I had the SAME EXACT problem. Was a complete pain in the ass to fix.

Basically you have to track down the patch/fix for XP SP2 (although might effect other OS's as well).. and I use the term loosely, "fix", since it involves Micro$oft and FireWire/1394 worked fine in 98/SP 1.

I will try and find the link for you.

By capture device I mean what is playing the media you are capturing? Camera, DVCAM, DVD, etc... ?

There is also a windows hotfix that causes problems with Avid, I belive its 824141. Just uninstall it through add/remove programs

Yup, what he said! I had a similar problem and it turned out to be an IRQ conflict with another external device.

My capture program has a check mark to capture lost frames. When you click it it just goes back until it catches them all, but yeah.... you've got some conflicts somewhere.

if capturing direct from tape get some head cleaner and clean the rollers and capstan.

also demagnitize the tape head, you will need a pinpoint demagnitizer for this, radio shack used to sell them.

Problem is in YOUR OS! You need the patch from Microsoft and or Sony.

The problem's two fold. One is in OS, and the other are with certain DV cameras. One is Sony, the other's Panasonic. But that is the second part of a two prong problem brotha.

I haven't found the link, but you can google it. Hopefully it doesn't take you as long to solve as me since I pointed you in the right direction.

Check that first. I will see if I can find the other two things you need.

Tried to ICQ this shit to you 3 times. So will just post it here.

Gibberish.

Hotfix info

http://support.microsoft.com/default...23120121120120

Also reinstall your DirectX (this sometimes fixes the problem for some reason)

I do not know your Sony miniDV camera model number, but there are some of them that need an updated driver.

Last thing,.. this has happened to me. Fairly simple, but make sure when you go to capture, you start at a point on the tape where you've recorded something on the tape. So first few frames into recording. If you try and start, or rewind from a point where you have not recorded, sometimes it will give you that error.

I have a Canon DV, and when I set points for the capture, if I do not set it on a recorded part, or go past the ending I will get that dropped frame or whatever.

Anyways, one or all of these should help you. Good luck!
