Why I won't skydive

I was reminded of this story over the weekend, when people asked me why I won't go skydiving.
------------------------------------------------------------------
From
http://www.th-record.com/1998/08/10/skydive.htm

On Saturday, instructor Robert T. Woodley, 45, of Graham died of
massive internal injures after his reserve chute failed to open.
The other diver, 27-year-old Allison Choe, who was on vacation from
New York state, was harnessed to him suffered serious injures in the fall.
Her condition was upgraded from critical to satisfactory condition at
Harborview on Sunday.

The two got the main parachute open, but because of unknown problems
had to release it immediately, Benson said. The two then tried to open the
reserve chute, but that became entangled and never fully opened.
The two crashed to the ground, with Woodley cushioning the woman's fall.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

I was friends with Robert Woodley, who tried to get me to jump many times, telling me "Only a moron could die from skydiving." Allison sent a note to Robert's funeral, the last thing he said to her was "I won't let you die."

Out of respect for my lost friend, I will never skydive.

If the air plane lands with no problem, then there was no reason to jump.

I've been wanting to skydive for the longest time and my fear of heights may have played a role in not doing it yet... and me wanting to do it with a friend and none of them will... but stories like this could never change my mind...

While your friend may have died doing something he loved, I'm sure quite a few more people died while driving to a job they absolutely hated. I think by not skydiving you are being disrespectful.

From my understanding of tandem jumps (I was seriously going to try it but backed out), the instructor is on the upper position and in the case that the chute wouldn't open, the passenger would usually take the impact. Your friend must have been really brave enough to try and save the woman by rotating himself to take the impact instead of her. Very noble thing for him to do for someone he barely knew.

I don't skydive because i never did understand the thrill, theres tons of other cool things to do that if things fuck up the end result isn't certain death..

btw that was 7 years ago , how is the other tandem diver doing ? it said she was doing o.k. , what were the injuries etc..

Steve,

I didn't read the rest of the post below the news link.

I would have never posted what I did if I knew he was a friend or even not.

Death really shouldn't be joked about no matter who it is.

My sincere appologies.
