Why I won't skydive

I was reminded of this story over the weekend, when people asked me why I won't go skydiving.
------------------------------------------------------------------
From
http://www.th-record.com/1998/08/10/skydive.htm

On Saturday, instructor Robert T. Woodley, 45, of Graham died of
massive internal injures after his reserve chute failed to open.
The other diver, 27-year-old Allison Choe, who was on vacation from
New York state, was harnessed to him suffered serious injures in the fall.
Her condition was upgraded from critical to satisfactory condition at
Harborview on Sunday.

The two got the main parachute open, but because of unknown problems
had to release it immediately, Benson said. The two then tried to open the
reserve chute, but that became entangled and never fully opened.
The two crashed to the ground, with Woodley cushioning the woman's fall.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

I was friends with Robert Woodley, who tried to get me to jump many times, telling me "Only a moron could die from skydiving." Allison sent a note to Robert's funeral, the last thing he said to her was "I won't let you die."

Out of respect for my lost friend, I will never skydive.

sorry to hear that shit dude

at least he died on impact, no pain.

sniperwolf 06-13-2005 09:12 PM

shit happens....now makes us two!

Spunky 06-13-2005 09:12 PM

That scares the shit out of me,even though it's supposed to be relatively safe there is always the risk

pornguy 06-13-2005 09:14 PM

If the air plane lands with no problem, then there was no reason to jump.

kaylacruz 06-13-2005 09:14 PM

I'm with you, afraid of heights, but it's stories like that that really make me not want to try that! Sorry to hear that..

KMR Stitch 06-13-2005 09:16 PM

Thats sad.

On another note I did go skydiving and it was a great experience.

neverlearn 06-13-2005 09:17 PM

And if Steve says he'll never skydive, I'd believe him.

You've pretty much done everything but ... and I mean EVERYTHING! : )

BV 06-13-2005 09:30 PM

My dad always said theres no reason to jump out of a perfectly good plane, I think I'd have to agree :warning

Shoehorn! 06-13-2005 09:38 PM

Sad story indeed, sorry about your loss.

NickB. 06-13-2005 09:48 PM

sorry to hear this steve

abadfish 06-13-2005 10:09 PM

I've been wanting to skydive for the longest time and my fear of heights may have played a role in not doing it yet... and me wanting to do it with a friend and none of them will... but stories like this could never change my mind...

While your friend may have died doing something he loved, I'm sure quite a few more people died while driving to a job they absolutely hated. I think by not skydiving you are being disrespectful.

txl 06-13-2005 10:22 PM

No offense but you have to be moron to jump out of a perfectly good airplane in the first place.

Sly 06-13-2005 10:24 PM

Sorry for your loss.

I've always wanted to go sky diving, I think it would be amazing.

Sly 06-13-2005 10:25 PM

Steve I think you should try it IN HONOR of your friend. Just my humble opinion...

Ok, but quoting that tear-jerking story gets people off my back. The truth is, that shit scares me!

xclusive 06-13-2005 10:28 PM

Sorry to hear about your loss steve. I hope he didn't feel any pain and that he is in a better place now.

DirtyRider 06-13-2005 10:30 PM

Pussy. :-)

From my understanding of tandem jumps (I was seriously going to try it but backed out), the instructor is on the upper position and in the case that the chute wouldn't open, the passenger would usually take the impact. Your friend must have been really brave enough to try and save the woman by rotating himself to take the impact instead of her. Very noble thing for him to do for someone he barely knew.

exactly!....

when you tandem jump, you are under the instructor...
http://www.bungeeamerica.com/images/tandem.jpg

he is the one with the parachute...

what your friend did was quite noble!...

He was that kind of guy, also a volunteer firefighter.

TaDoW 06-13-2005 11:12 PM

I'm sorry for your loss steve, that's horrible :-(

SmokeyTheBear 06-13-2005 11:19 PM

"Only a moron could die from skydiving." LOL sorry had to laugh.. the best therapy is laughter..

SmokeyTheBear 06-13-2005 11:25 PM

I don't skydive because i never did understand the thrill, theres tons of other cool things to do that if things fuck up the end result isn't certain death..

btw that was 7 years ago , how is the other tandem diver doing ? it said she was doing o.k. , what were the injuries etc..

DutchTeenCash 06-13-2005 11:29 PM

wow terrible sorry for your loss... I have a buddy who skydives too asked me a zillion times too, his jumping buddy died some yrs ago too, collapsed against a house noone ever knew what was wrong they both are pro and worked for the airforce as well... my buddy still jumps though, not for me...

Odin88 06-13-2005 11:50 PM

That's really ironic. On a par with the Titanic crewman who reputedly boasted, "God Himself couldn't sink this ship".

BV 06-14-2005 12:32 AM

Steve,

I didn't read the rest of the post below the news link.

I would have never posted what I did if I knew he was a friend or even not.

Death really shouldn't be joked about no matter who it is.

My sincere appologies.

I was just going to post my nude skydivers picture until I read the whole thread. My condoleances Steve.

Seb.
