I am going to buy a new holiday digital camera, i was thinking or on SONY Cyber-shot DSC-P200 or SONY Cyber-shot DSC-V3.

what you guys think of these cameras? i dont understand much of it and i would like only a camera that is kinda compact but with a decent resolution. Most of my friends cameras take pics with no control on the whites or the red eyes (is it human or machine problem?), also they dont have a good zoom (also can anyone explain me or point me a site where i can know more about optical and digital zoom). I was tempted to go for a Sony cause they have a very good reputation but as i said i know nothing about it and wanted some opinions. The price range is about 400-600 euros, the only thing i am afraid is that the compact cameras like the P200 arent so good as others like cyber-shot. plz fullfill me with your knowledge or point me some place to read more about it

IMO if you must use a consumer digicam you are better off (if shooting model candids) to get something with the highest megapixal, the biggest sensor, and the FASTEST high quality lens. (ex: f/1.8 lets in more than twice the light of f/2.8)

because a fast lens needs more glass the camera will be physically bigger than the very small pocket cams which are the fashion now---so people sacrifice the convenience of a very small camera for a less versatile camera.

the micro sized compact camera is really a toy, it can make OK pix, but needs lots of light (or flash) to get good pix. (so for candids you usually have to work outdoors, not the best situation sometimes) and skin does not look very glamorous when shooting with the little on-camera flash of a compact camera---so for good skin you should work with no flash or bounced light.

and your most glamorous shots usually will come from available light. without a fast lens the compact camera will not shoot handheld on a dark street without flash, inside a club without flash, or in normal room light without flash---this is something to consider if you want the models to look good---and they WILL NOT look good if you have to use the on-camera flash.

also fast lens allows DOF choices, this is very useful in isolating the model from a visually distracting background.

IF you have to stay with Sony the the dsc-v3 is a little better imo, however for that price range you should be able to get a nice cannon,Nikon or even Olympus. On the lower end scale I've fond Olympus to make great consumer cameras, especially if you know nothing about lighting, flash, etc.

first of all thanks for the imput, i have learned a few more things on these lines. after reading many things i am more tempted to go on the p200 or some other similar model of the competitors. i want the camera for fun and i want to be able to carry it on my pockets without concerns to be assaulted cause a big camera is visible. i also dont like shitty fotos and i had the idea that you just confirmed to me that these cameras arent as good as the non compact. i have been reading but i think i ll go to a store and do some tests there with 2 or 3 models and decide.

some guys say other cameras are also good and with lower price .. i just was tempted by sony cause of the reputation and the famous Carl Zeiss lens.

as i said i am a noob on this
