Hosting in Netherlands vs. Panama?
In order to comply with 2257 and not get out of the business completely, ive been thinking about hosting offshore.
While there is Canada, ive also been looking at The Netherlands and Panama as they seem to be major traffic hubs of their respective continents. Besides pricing, im wondering about a few things: firstly, I dont know how data is transferred internationally so I'm wondering if there is an advantage to Panama as data could be transferred to surfers in North America over land versus overseas (however its done) from a server in the Netherlands. Also, if anyone has any experience or can reccomend a host post it here ![]() im curious to see what people think in hosting in Netherlands Vs. Panama |

I am obviously biased towards Netherlands because our new data center is located there so I will present my view on why Netherlands based hosting is better.
1: Netherlands is a stable country that is part of the European Union, so government stability and general stability is much greater than Panama 2: Netherlands is located at the heart of Europe allowing quick access to all European countries and roughly 80ms delay to New York, Cali -> New York is also 80ms delay, so its not far at all 3: All major data exchange is now done via fiber optic cables, there is no difference whether they run over land or water, the speed is constant 186,000miles/sec, so its only distance that is a factor not the medium over which it runs 4: Netherlands has a much stronger and more established Internet presence, AMS-IX ( Amsterdam Internet Exchange ) is now the largest single point of Internet bandwidth approaching 70Gigabits/sec!!! http://www.ams-ix.net/technical/stats/ For these reasons Reality Check Network choose Amsterdam with 10Gigabit connectivity to AMS-IX as its second data center location. The Netherlands is a more stable country and has had a hosting infrastructure in place for quite some time. Unfortunately Panama does not have hosting facilities that have been online for a long time.

Netherlands, if you must choose from these two, but there are better places, depending on what you need exactly. My sig explains it.

Panama is well-placed for hosting - the Maya link goes right thru it in all directions. The Maya link goes both eastbound and westbound also north (US and Canada) and there is a link to the Caribbean basin. Panama also a large "silicon park" with a number of hosts and high-tech corps. But personally.. I would not trust any one location/country :-) Get servers and spread em all over! :-)

I am a Principle in www.siliconcanal.com and we will take good care of you from Panama.
We already host several big programs, another top resource board , and countless numbers of smaller guys as well. Just let us know what you need, and if you want references I can get those for you as well. ( I wont post the companies we have servers for here though ) Icq is 174842541 |
